a must-stop in Berkeley, especially in the late night hours! Helps to soak up the suds...

I graduated from Cal in '91 and ate there almost every week. It is the perfect place for a late night snack. I eat there every time I make it back to Berkeley.

Wow is the word I use for this place, The red onion and Italian sausage pizza in the best in the bay area. Go on Tuesday night and the beers are only 2.50. Get there early as the line can be long!

Top Dog is definitely the best grilled hot dog/sausage for your money... especially when you need to settle down from a long night of drinking/partying/studying. This is not some fake toppings driven nonsense or celebrity endorsed bull (Pinks), but an honest to goodness basic dog that will change the way you look at another dog or sausage. Think: quality of meat and cooked fresh, not a rubbery thing that's been chilling in dirty water or a steam tray. To be honest, it might not be the most pleasant experience for everyone. The lines are long at times, especially if you're lined up behind a ton of folks who just left one of the local bars. The order taker is usually abrupt, and even borderline rude. Think: the soup nazi (from Seinfeld) but with hotdogs. Not really that bad anymore, just don't expect any small talk or help. And I'm one of the rare guys that actually tip at Top Dog, but still no thanks or smile. This sounds like a mixed review, but it's because I've had it a million times and love it to death, including the dirt and grime (literal, but mostly figurative). Don't forget to either bring or purchase a drink because these things come off the grill hot. 5 stars for the budget friendly eats, and trust me, despite the fine eateries in Berkeley, you will always return for a simple hot link, top dog, chicken apple...
