Zachary's Chicago Pizza
It's hard to argue with Zachary's Chicago Pizza's 150 Best Pizza awards. Perhaps it's the unique stuffed pizza form factor, or the mildly spicy pizza sauce that makes this pizza place so popular? Whatever the reason, Zachary's has been a favorite amongst it's clientele since the 1980's and will remain that way, as it continues to please it's fans, now even offering gluten-free pizza, and a take and bake option for those wanting to serve fresh and piping hot pizza in their homes. However, If you do come inside, you'll get to admire the many unique pieces of customer-submitted art - winners from Zachary's biennial art contests.
zachary's often gets voted best of the bay area for pizza, despite the fact that it's all the way in the east bay (not in s.f. proper). they serve deep dish chicago pizza, which takes at least 45 minutes to make. add that to the wait time for your table, and you'd better not arrive starving. the pizza is definitely tasty, but a bit heavy for me. not for the lactose intolerant or faint of heart.
I know all of you love this restaurant and have for years, but really, the pizza is nasty, too much sauce, and what's up with the cornmeal on the crust. I've tried to like this as so many people ooh and aah over this stuff, but after three tries over many years, I'm still inclined to believe that most people don't have a clue what good food is. If you want authentic, good pizza, go over to LoCoCo's on Piedmont Ave. I can understand kids liking this stuff, but that's it.
Zachary's was our local pizza join during college, and my roomates used to fight rabidly over the box when somebody walked in the door with one. Luckly you need eat only 1-2 slices and you can hibernate for the winter, so we never went hungry. People often debate whether this is real Chicago pizza or not, which is really not important. It's influenced by Chicago pizza, but stands on its own with the stuffed crust and unique combinations. Zachary's is a requisite stop on the foodie path of life.
This is by far the best pizza ever. I'm writing this from Chicago after eating supposedly 'real' Chicago pizza. And Zachary's has them beat. Fresher, more tasty, and seemingly more healthy pizza. Awesome.
If you like deep dish pizza, this is the place for you. I know pizza isn't the healthiest food, but with the tomatoes and fresh ingredients they put in their pies, it feels healthy. Of course you can always go for their good health pizza. My favorite is the spinach and mushroom. YUM!
