Kirala is not just another good Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. Kirala has one-of-a-kind sushi creations and delicious specialties from Robata grill that you will not find anywhere else. For fifteen years, it's been consistently voted one of the Best Japanese restaurants, where loyal patrons spend a relaxed evening ordering tasty appetizers and main dishes, while enjoying Japanese beer and premium sakes from Japan.
I can't believe the 2-star review; he gave Tachibana 5 stars (which, it's a great restaurant, no fault there) but Kirala 2. Honestly, I've been to both, and Kirala is a hands-down winner in food quality. Fresher fish, better sake, warmer atmosphere. A bit pricey and longer lines, but there's a reason for these things! A couple of things about the wait : a) Make sure to take the time to talk to the host (the older gentelman) - make sure he recognizes you. You'll get updates from him regularly on how long you've got. b) Go to the bar area (there are tables next to it) and order a large Sake from the great menu they've got. I can't understand the people who stand outside! Yeah, it takes time to get your table, but I actually find the time spent relaxing near the bar, chatting and having a drink makes the meal that much better. Anticipation!
Yes, there's a line forming outside the restaurant 15 minutes before it opens. No, they don't take reservations. But, try it once and you'll find it's well worth it! Sushi is high quality and nice portions. The grill offers additional selections you won't normally find at a japanese restaurant. And I personally *love* their chawan mushi.
I love Kirala's off of Shattuck in Berkeley. Sitting at the sushi bar is a pleasure. The fish is fresh and the chef's are very nice. When Toro is available, it is a delicious must have. Only issue with Kirala is the wait. Wait can be long and the waiting area is too far from the door which gives the feeling of lack of attention from the greeter/host.
Kirala makes great sushi: fresh and tasty. Plus I like their grilled items like yellowtail collar and squid, which have a nice rich, roasted flavor to them. My sister also loves their udon, but I'm not crazy for it. If you're craving sushi in the East Bay, this is probably your best bet. Be prepared to wait up to an hour though! A bit on the spendy side.
