Located in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto , Masse's has provided Berkeley residents and visitors with the most tasty and beautiful tartes, cakes, macarons, and more. Their delicate morsels are crafted lovingly and stylishly, and often look far too pretty to eat. Luckily, their traditional and seasonal offerings taste just as good as they look. Pair your dessert with a fresh cup of coffee, and take a seat inside the tiny bakery, or at one of the sidewalk tables.
I just had the most perplexing phone conversation with the owner of this place. She was so rude!! All I wanted to do was to order a cake for my son's 1st birthday. Mind you, I love this place: we had our wedding cake made by them several years ago; my daughter's 1st birthday cake was also from there... So, all I asked was whether I can see their menu to be able to order over the phone (because I work full time in the city and have two young kids and can't come in to order). So instead of spending a second to fax the menu to me, the clearly psychotic owner spent 10 minutes telling how she does not have time to put the menu on the website. She also basically insinuated that those of us who work in an office setting have too much free time on our hands to browse websites and order online! I am in the office every day at 6 am and work at least 10 hours a day, so I don't really consider myself an idle type. This was just rude and totally uncalled for! And the really sad thing for me is that I just can't bring myself to ever go back there again!
We bought 7 beautiful individual cakes instead of one big one for our wedding and it worked out very well. Each cake was gorgeous and looked lovely, and tasted even better. Guests could try different kinds, yum! It was more economical do get gourmet cake this way and I'm glad we did; we'll be back for birthday cake!
Hands down, best place for coffee in Berkeley because the owners aren't trying to rip you off and you're not surrounded by obnoxious lefties, irritated grad students, or ugly dudes trying to score a date. The selection of pastries are great, but beforewarned, you CANNOT go in there expecting to get a large birthday cake for the next day. There were a few high-maintenance customers while we were there, but quality takes time people. Fun just to browse their creations if you're worried about packing on the calories. The best part is, the place is family owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Masse and their cute sons.
Some of the most beautiful and best-tasting cakes ever! Superb flavors and spectacular designs - every time I've bought one of their cakes, people rave about both the flavors and the elaborate aesthetics.
