I've been to Zza's at least twice and both times the service was absolutely terrible. The first time was bad, but I’m always willing to give a convenient spot a second chance even if I’m not dazzled by their operation. I was recently there again for a special event. We were at party of about 10 and the ONLY people in the restaurant. You'd think the servers would be able to handle one table, but they forgot to bring things like syrup with the french toast or people’s drink orders. Water was served late and then never refilled. When servers were asked to bring over condiments or salt and pepper it took an extremely long time for them to return. 3 of the entrees didn't come out until the rest of the group was nearly done eating! If they can't handle one group, I shudder to think of what happens when the restaurant is full...if it ever gets full. We tried to talk to the manager/owner about our poor service experience and she was unmoved. In most restaurants customer satisfaction is made a priority and even if things go wrong the management offers enough apology or throws in a free dessert or something to help you feel that you haven't been taken advantage of. In this case the manager basically shrugged her shoulders and offered a miniscule discount. It was ridiculous. And of course since it was a large party the “gratuitiy” is mandatory so we didn’t even have the option of making a weak statement by giving a 15% tip instead of 20%.
I can tolerate mediocre food, gaudy atmosphere and somewhat dirty surroundings (the walls could use a fresh coat of paint and the floors a good scrubbing), but a poor attitude from the service and management is completely unacceptable. Zza’s could really stand to take a look at their customer service practices and implement training of some sort to bring their restaurant up to par.
Its not a five star restaurant but it has really delicious food. I'm gonna be honest, I probably would'nt go back there to eat-in but I probably would have some delivery because it looks like you'd have to wait a long time for pick-up as well. Good food though! And its too dark inside! Oh yeah, the water was dirty and when I asked for a new one they gave me another dirty water, until the third water it was finally CLEAN! The service is bad TOO! Take my advice... I would rate the food a 4 but i would rate the place and service a 1
this place is always good.
come in, grab a seat, draw on the table paper, have a glass of wine...enjoy something from the never-changing menu...
i love going to zzas and i always will...i always leave feeling full and happy.
walk around the lake after dinner or catch a movie at the grand lake....i love oakland!
Good food, well prepared. Nice ambiance for family dining. This is the place for families to go with small children (they can use the crayons provided on the tables). Or maybe you might want to draw something inspired yourself! Excellent pizzas with the lovely thin crusts, good salads, great gnocchi. A real Oakland treat.
The chairs are hard and uncomfortable. Had barley soup, chicken salad and pesto/rockshrimp angel hair pasta, with chocolate creme brule' for dessert. The food was good! Bread was very good, olive spread did not hold together well, so used butter.
Wait staff was a mixed bag; ours appeared to be under the influence (almost dozed off during ordering process) and exposed the plummer split (her butt); I don't want to see this in a restaurant. Restaurant was very busy, but other wait staff intercepted our needs much more efficently than our waitress.
i have been to zza's a dozen times and am always happy! the fresh baked bread and olive tapenade served right when you sit down are divine. the pizzas and calzones are my faves. the house wine is cheap and tasty. nice views of lake merritt! romantic, but casual!
