The price is on the expensive side, for Chinese restaurant, but the quality is well above average. We had a beef dish, an oyster-tofu-mushroom casserole, and deep fried milk custard and shrimp balls. The last one was a pleasant surprise, and was very delicious. I heard Thursday dinner special duck is also very good. Service was ok - I had no complaints.
I am Chinese and I don't even like the food there. Their service sucks and their food is over-priced. You only get good service if you tip the waitress beforehand. My aunt took me to this place and these waiters/waitresses expect you to put money in their hand to get good service. That is in addition to the tip of 15% that they are charging you. I would never go there with my family. I only went because my aunt was a regular customer. But look what she has to do to get service. This is so sick!
They automatically have a 10% service charge for dim sum. I'm assuming that's for tip.
And then they tax that 10%. That's illegal. You can only tax for food/beverages.
Food is okay. But you better check your bill.
We read the reviews and decided to try Peony - what a disappointment. We had terrible service, having to ask for everything several times before getting it. There was no soap in the bathroom. (What does that say about the hands of the staff?) Our water pitcher had crud on the bottom indicating it hadn't been actually washed in some time. So the dim sum was ok - but certainly no better than cleaner and nicer establishments like Jade Villa. I can't understand why anyone would bother going here when there are so many better dim sum places around.
I usually don't feel inclined to write reviews, esp negative ones, but my experience here was awful! I just graduated from Cal and my parents made reservations for two tables. After graduation my family (with out of town guests) arrived at the restaurant and had to wait for our own tables, which were stuck all the way in the back next to the kitchen and not even next to each other. It was so hot and stuffy and when we asked them to turn up the air conditioner, they said something like they had a wedding going on and they had to preserve the air conditioner for them?!?! The service was awful, food wasn't that special, and it's pricey compared to other places. Usually I have a high tolerance for ok service, food, and atmosphere for myself, but with family, we expected better.
If I could do it over again, I would've gone to that dim sum restaurant at Jack London Square instead of Peony - it stinks! :(
We had the worst dim sum experience this mother's day (2006). It seemed like most of the carts carried the same items and many other never approached our dining areas. We should of gone to Jade Villa instead.
