Mama's Royal Cafe
Mama's Royal Cafe serves breakfast, lunch & brunch seven days a week. We opened our doors in February, 1974 on Broadway at 40th St., between the Temescal and Piedmont areas of Oakland. We are dedicated to serving quality food made from the finest ingredients. We pride ourselves in using the best local products such as Niman Ranch meats, Acme bread, Petaluma eggs, Le Pique-Nique sausages, & Peerless coffee. Whether you're celebrating the morning after with mimosa and eggs benedict or having a business lunch with a grilled chicken salad, Mama's Royal Cafe is the place to be.
Over the last 6 years the service has been consistently good and the food fresh and home made. I hate paying for breakfast out, since it is so easy to make a good one at home. But we love treating ourselves to peoplewatching and good food here.
A place that has a cool, vintage and homey atmosphere just lacks the basic fundamentals of customer service 101. The food although good, is above average cost for a cafe. Being ignored, talked to rudely, uncomfortable seats, cramped seating and slow service made this cafe not worth any future trips.
There's usually a wait on the weekends for Mama's...that's how you know you've found it. Because when you mosey up to the storefront, it looks like a random little hole-in-the-wall. Once you're granted entrance, you'll notice they're serving up Acme Bread and Hobb's smoked meats. By the time you get to the tofu scramble, you're like...yum yum, gimme some.
mama's eggs blackstone (like eggs benedict but with applewood smoked bacon, spinach, tomatoes and sauce), home fries and coffee has made all right with the world post-debauch many times. everything is good here. try to go before 10am on sat/sun or plan on waiting about an hour. this is the oakland style rejoinder to rick and ann's in berkeley.
I just love Mama's. Part of it is pure nostalgia, as I have been going here for 23 years. The coffee is wonderful, the breakfasts divine. The grandchildren love it, as did the children in their day. Cheers!
Mama's cooking is still the best, although Mama now has tattoos, a nose ring and a bit of attitude. Mama's hasn't changed -- a great Oakland diner with best eggs benedict & eggs florentine in town. Come on a weekday and avoid the long wait.
The place is typically very busy, and on a weekend, the line can be as much as 40 minutes long. Still the delay should not dissuade you, as the food is worth waiting for. They have a nice selection of egg dishes, and their omellettes are varied as well as tasty. The star though, is definitely the hollandaise. They do classic Eggs Benedicit, Eggs Florentine, and other occasional hollandaise specials. Be sure to check the specials board, as they regularly update it with delectable treats.
Yahoo lists them at 1012 Broadway. They aren't there. Go to 4012 Broadway for Mama's great food.
