Spending an afternoon in Oakland Chinatown, Mom and I were looking for a place to eat. She wanted a hole-in-the-wall so we went to one. It was 45 deg outside and the air conditioning was full blast inside. We left and went to another place but their air was on too, and the kitchen & bathroom was disgusting. We stepped into the Silver Dragon and like Goldilocks & the 3 Bears, this place felt just right! The heat was on and the staff was welcoming. We were seated right away and the waiter, in a crisp red dinner jacket, took our lunch order and the food was delivered hot and delicious! We had the fried wonton, that melted in your mouth, with sweet & sour sauce that was thick and yummy. Mom had the lunch special which was a stirfry with shrimp, chicken and crisp broccoli. I had the shrimp, chicken and snow peas. The shrimp was big, juicy and plentiful. Everything tasted fresh and the portions were generous. I can't wait to go back! For a bit of Old Oakland charm, I totally recommend the Silver Dragon.
I have eaten at Silver Dragon for many years. It was once my all time favorite Chinese Restaurant. It used to be a delight and reasonably priced with excellent service. Used to be.
We went there yesterday and it was awful and so much more expensive that I was shocked. We saw the only other table that was occupied receiving very rude service. The food tasted rotten, as in putrid. The portions were small, which was actually a blessing given the extreme bad condition of the food. There was torn and missing wallpaper over large parts of the wall. The patrons at the other table were trying to send their duck back, but the rude employee was telling them no in a variety of forceful and creative ways. Before we left the waitress actually came back to our table to try to get a larger tip from us, telling us we meant 8 dollars instead of the 6 dollars we had clearly written on the bill.
Prices have tripled since I first went there and food quality has gone down the toilet. Avoid this place if you can and if you value your taste buds!
Silver Dragon has got to be one of the worst place to eat in Oakland China town. Granted they have large area for banquet hall but their food is so bad it stinks, we had a company dinner there and it was one of the worst I've had
if you want to get rip off, go there.
I have to admit- Silver Dragon is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant. They do everything well- seafood, beef, and fowl. The service is top-notch, and the prices remain competitive. Sure there are fancier more modern restaurants, but the food is what counts. The decor needs a little updating- think 1970's era kung-fu movie set! Still, I'll put up with the quirky interior as long as they keep dishing up superb dishes, like the Peking Duck, Dried Scallop Soup, and Double Happiness Scallops. The lobster with green onion and ginger is another fave.
