Merritt Bakery, Oakland

I love the food in the restaurant here, 1950's style the breakfasts are wonderful waffles, pancakes etc. I have been going there for twenty years or more I stopped going there awhile ago though when they got rid of the older waitresses and replaced them with young attractive women - how lo can you go.

the bakery is fine, but the restaurant is wildly over-priced for diner food. for the same cost, you could go to a 'nice' restaurant...or get your diner food at denny's for a quarter of the prices charged here. it's a shame that supporting an oakland institution is such a rip-off.

Horrible!! Service was crawling. Food was far overpriced!! Should be 40% lower. and the quality was barely passable!! You can buy a cake or baked goods there- but don't bother eating there....ever!!! F

Bakery is great Restaurant sucks, over priced mediocre food.

There bakery dept. omg!! words can't say, there so GOOD! especially there Black Forest Cake and Strawberry Short Cake, If you want a GOOD GOOD Cake,Cupcakes,Danishes, then Merritt Bakery is the place, I've never eaten in the Restaurant part, but I know people that has and there's wasn't any complaints. But if its like the Bakery part then I know it's GOOD.

I'm pregnant now and omg! I've craved nothing more than a strawberry shortcake (or strawberry tall cake as i like to call it... so many layers!!!) from there. The regular food is good too. The cakes are slightly pricey but worth every bite. My baby shower cake is costing us 80 bucks for a half sheet of the strawberry tall cake but omg it is soooooooooooooo worth it! It has the feel of a Nations burger in the dinning area, but they are all business in the bakery. Kinda busy so don't let the wait discourage you. Go to this restuarant!

yes, certainly the bakery is a classic, but the restaurant leaves much to be desired. Terribly overpriced for the quality--canned veggies are de rigur. And the service is slow, surly, indifferent, typical of family-style coffee shops everywhere, so this is not too surprising. I guess I just expect more considering the dear prices they charge for such mediocre food. Only saving grace is late night opening hours, when there isn't much else to choose from.

I just love Merritt Bakery. The quality of the baked goods and service is excellent, and the prices are reasonable.

any pastry you want - they have it! they will even make a cake to look like a hamburger for you! the pastries are perfect, and so are all the savory non-pastry items! they have the classics you love like home made mac n' cheese plus they're open late! 1am weekdays, 2am weekends
