What a waste of our money. Both the sesame chicken and the kung po chicken were TOO salty (and we usually like salt), which leaves me to wonder if they brine the chicken. If it's not brining that's making the chicken dishes salty, the cook has to lay off the sodium/soy in the sauces. On the flipside, the pot stickers were tasteless. The only good thing was the white rice. Our search for a good Chinese restaurant continues.
The food here is excellent and really Chinese, not the Chinese-American stuff you get at most of the other places. The people are very friendly. I had Mongolian Lamb that was out of this world and a dried scallop with cabbage dish that was incredible. This restaurant rivals those real and traditional Chinese restaurants in San Francisco and it's the only one I've found in the Walnut Creek area that does.
This place is OUTSTANDING. It competes with the best Chinese restaurants in SF and of course it is less expensive - and there are no shortage of free parking spaces ! The service is fine and no phony baloney pretensiousness. Also, it often seems patronized by local Chinese folks, which is always a good sign. Also, my wife is Asian and she is very particular and she loves this place.
Excellent food, especially the Dim Sum on weekends! The menu has lots to choose from. The ingredients are fresh. The service is sometimes kind of indifferent, but then again they don't keep coming by all the time asking how you like the food.
It's the best family-style Shanghai food restaurant in town. You have to go there frequently (as we do) to start appreciating the authencity of Chinise cousine served there.
Unlike some other Walnut Creek restaurants thi place is not fancy or flashy. It fits perfect their off-the-main-fare location in the sleeping neigbourhood.
One thing to be prepared though, people who work there do not speak English very well so try to be patient, tolerant, and polite. Believe me, it pays in good food and excellent service.
We used to drive from our home in Walnut Creek into Oakland when we tired of the lemon chicken/chop suey or the fairly good but very overpriced offerings in the area. Shanghia offers flavors that I haven't tasted since a long ago trip to China. The decore is so so, the location is lousy, but the parking is easy, and while the service isn't terribly crisp, they are freindly and willing to please. The value comes from the width of oferings (close to a hundred items on the menu, and they will make something you want, but isn't on the menu). The kitchen features Hong Kong and Shanghai dishes, but we have worked our way through most of the very varied menu and have had more great dishes than mediocre, and nothing that was downright bad. Highly recommended.
