A bit pricey but just a bit. Food is delicious. Always crowded because it's so good. Service is good, food is good, environment good. And being from Oakland, there is a large parking lot :) there. Try the Ginger cake for desert, Undescribable in deliciousness.
Great location and building. Menu items are hits and misses for sure. Weak service, filthy waitstaff and tight seating combined with virtually no waiting area really take away from what is a great concept. Too bad they can't figure out how to fix this.
I concur with the other reviewers that said the servers look more like grunge rock band members rather than waiters. My party of three had to wait more than 50 minutes to get our food after we ordered due to the incompetence of our server. What exacerbated the situation was the fact he lied to us and said that our order was put in just after a party of 15 and that was why we had to wait. Hmmm...after we gave our server our order, he proceeded to take the orders of the two tables next to us who came in 10 minutes after us. Yep, you guessed it, both of those tables were served before us and they also paid their bills and LEFT the restaurant before we even got our food.
Okay, the food finally gets here. My wife orders the French toast. Okay, the menu didn't say anything about the bread being a sourdough baguette portion which tasted as bad as it looked. My poor wife choked it down to spare the feelings of my mother, who was treating us to breakfast. I had the two egg breakfast which included potatoes and I ordered a side of chicken apple sausage. Mine was decent but nothing I would ever pay $12 for.
Do you like fresh juiced apple juice? That's how they serve theirs, freshly juiced. Somehow I can't justify paying the $3.50 they charged me for the 2 apples they put into the Jack Lalanne juicer and gave to me.
Breakfast for 3 people ran more than $40 so this is definitely an expensive place. The place is incredibly loud and incredibly crowded. I personally like places like that but the food and service didn't match the ambiance. The pizza looked okay but I'm never going back to find out.
Me and my family go to Chow a lot for the food. The spaghetti and pizza are really good. However, the service is just awful. Everyone who works there looks like they are in a rock band, which is just fine by me- however, they have the attitudes to match! I recommend this place, but don't expect friendly service.
I heard that it was a good place to eat, but that it was loud. The only thing thing that was correct was the loudness. The drinks were not very good. My white sangria tasted like pineapple orange juice with a splash of cheap wine. The mamosa tasted like cheap champange. The service was very slow. I even had to refill my own iced tea. I would only recomend this place for a beer at the bar.
We went here for my GF's 39th birthday. Snuck some airline bottles of booze and asked the bartender for 3 small glasses of ice - no problem. Sat outside - inside too flippin' noisy. I ordered the pizza - very good. 1 person ordered a noodle dish, also very good, 3rd person ordered the vegtable lasagna - excellent. They have space heaters outdoors and the service was very good and the price - no bargain - but reasonable.
This is fun restaurant. I would highly recommend the short-ribs--falling off the bone. The pork chops are ok--nothing special and if you held me to it I would say slightly overcooked. They have daily specials are usually interesting and a safe bet. They have a strong wine and beer list, but nothing harder. The downside of Chows is that it tends to be loud--but the upside is that it creates an atmosphere that is kid friendly.
