I seldom go out to eat because I am very critical of restaurant food, but last night, my family went there. The food and services were great. The waitresses were very polite. The cooked and raw salmons were fresh and delicious. The prices were reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant to all my friends, and I will go back there again.
This was one of my mom's favorite restaurants. At 86 year of age, she went there are least once each month. Then, after she became too frail to walk, she got a Hoverround scooter. She was so excited to use the scooter to get to Ray's to order take-out, but when she got there, the Staff refused to let her inside to order. The Staff were mean, belittling, frighterned my mom, and chased her off. She came home and cried. The message was clear. You are not welcome at Ray's if you can no longer walk and depend upon a power scooter to go outside.
I ate there last night for the first time and it was really good. The sushimi was ultra fresh, my chicken was delish and the miso soup was perfect. The only thing I didn't like was the price. But I guess all Japanese food is expensive (not student on a budget friendly at least!). If it was a little less expensive I'd go there again soon.
im super picky about my food, let alone my sushi. this sushi is well worth the drive. i live two freeway exits away and the generous portion of the miso soup was still steaming hot when i got home. everyone in hayward knows its freezing outside right now. the food is very reasonably priced. the service was excellent, she said it'd be ready in 15 mins and it was...i couldn't believe it. ive never experienced such promptness anywhere else and the place was packed, all tables full and people were waiting to be seated...im glad i found this place. naked fish left a bad taste in my mouth with skimpy orders but charging me for extra, always forgetting a part of my order, long ass wait;by the time i get home with my order i sure and the hell don't want to drive back. 8 long months without sushi. thanks rays for a great dinner, just a little more wasabi next time. see you soon.
This is the best sushi in Fremont, Hayward, Pleasanton and Walnut Creek bar none. Everytime I have taken friends to the sushi bar they are blown away due to the quantity and quality of the sushi. If your looking for someone who speaks perfect English and who will sit down and guide you through the menu like your use to at Denny's when you snap your fingers this is not for you. If you don't understand what sushi is about then pay tripple for less at Pleasanton, Walnut creek it will cut down the wait time at Rays. Rays customers understand this. I will always settle for the best, quantity and quality and give them a break for service, they try their best but for some they expect to be treated like stars. These reviews add up to little seeing is believing.
*note* 5 stars at lunch time.
For how much you're spending, the quality is top notch, the portions are HUGE, and everything is always quite fresh. I only have a few places I like better, and they're all more/considerably more expensive. I have found that the service at lunch is definitely better (Ray himself is usually there, which may be the reason :P), although it can be very busy (they open at 11:30)
Only times I've ever found the service lacking - dinner time. However during lunch I find they usually don't even charge for the miso, you never have any issues getting a refill (you may have to ask, but you can ask anyone and it happens almost instantly), and if you come around often, well they show appreciation for loyalty.
-If you like Sashimi their tekka, sake, and hamachi (that's tuna, salmon, and yellow tail) dons are THE BEST VALUE I've found on sashimi. Just under 15 bucks for any of the three, and it's enough food you can hardly eat it fast enough.
-Some of their best rolls: Super Dynamite (spicy, filling), Ray's Roll (Signature roll? Very tasty, sweet, but filling at the same time), and almost any of the fancy/american rolls-Spider, 49er, under the sea etc. are done very very well
-Very interesting-Volcano. It's on fire!
