If you live in Hayward and have friends and have never tried Val's Burgers then you need to stop considering those people as friends. Val's burgers is the best burger joint in the East Bay HANDS DOWN! I'd wager that its the best burger joint in all of the Bay Area and Northern California, but I haven't tried them all. If you have a friend that isn't from the area and they want something you can't get anywhere else. Val's is your place. And when they say you only need one order of fries for two people, they mean it.
had baby burgers, fries, root beer, ice cream soda. Burgers were dry, extra for the tomato, fries o.k., root beer was watered down, ice cream soda unlike anything I have seen before. Not an old fashioned ice cream soda, but a concotion that should only be photographed, not eaten. Canned whip cream on top of huge scoop of ice cream sitting on top of soda glass. Soda itself was unrecongnizable.
Waitress nice, but management rude and unconcerned. Apparently he doesn't need us as customers as we will certainly not go there again. Food not good. In and Out beats this place by a mile.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a great old style burger experience this is the place to go. Incredible burgers, great steak fries, amazing grilled onions, all with an old school diner feel. The place isn't big and is usually crowded but worth the trip every once in a while.
Overall I'd say Val's is a really good place, the burgers are definitely good, I think it's the atmosphere that really makes this place though, the milk shakes are excellent, they give you a glass then the metal mixer full of more shake, so it's almost like getting two shakes in one, they'll make the shake with any ice cream flavor they've got, i think they have at least 10-20, i usually get cookies n' cream, i actually like the shakes more than the burgers i think, they also serve those thick steak fries which are good, i don't think you even need to get a papa burger, mama, fries and a shake is usually more than enough for me, you can split one order of fries w/ two people usually cuz they are such a big basket, it does get crowded though, i think weekends and nights is probably worst, usually you'll have to wait at least 5-10 mins, sometimes longer, but most times it's not too bad, check the hours they're closed sundays and mondays i think, I don't think these are the absolute best burgers I've had, but they are very good and the atmosphere, large fries and delicious shakes all add up to a very good dining experience..
