After visiting Kais Japanese Restaurant I decided to write some thing : I would like to rate it with 4 star because Most of the time, the service is pretty great. There are times when it just seemed like a lot of the servers did not want to be there and they can get a little bit of an attitude with the customers.

This place gives great value... frequented by many high schoolers but dont let that fool you. It has great food at great prices. However, their Oakland branch is not so... that one is geared for business people near the convention center... a separate review is needed.

I have been going to Kai's for years now. Their original location is in Alameda and they just opened a second one in Oakland. Kai's is my favorite Japanese restaurant to go to. I usually order the beef teriyaki, super maki roll, or any other sushi rolls are very good. It is reasonably priced. They offer very friendly service most of the time. It is also clean and the ambiance is nice. They are usually crowded during the busy lunch hour, but they are give fast service.

Small, informal, family atmosphere. Street parking only. Decent Japanese food for reasonable prices. Nice owners.

Nice little hole in the wall
By ,
The entres are terrific. Basics like the teriyaki chicken and beef are made really well. The portion sizes are large and the prices are very reasonable. The sushi, however, could be better. While the cooked sushi like California Rolls are good, the nigiri isn't the freshest I've had. The dining room could use a bit of updating, but if that's what keeps the prices, then so be it. It's a bit of a run down and dark. I typically order take-out so this doesn't bother me so much. The service isn't bad, but it's not the most attentive group. There's a woman who runs the counter that is a bit harsh, but in a odd friendly way. Overall, a great place for great Japanese take-out.

Cheap prices, but the sushi isnt good
By ,
The prices are cheap if you order the normal chicken entrees, its less than $5. The sushi isn't that good though, i would compare it to something you get at safeway, sushi house is way better. The person who said the rolls are bigger and taste better than sushi house must be the person who owns kais. lol But really, the katsu is good I get it all the time, so if you want some kind of chicken plate go to Kai's, if you want good sushi, go to sushi house

Loved it!!
By ,
I love Kai's! I got tired of waiting around at Sushi House... your better bet is to go down Park Street to Kai's. They've got great rolls and the bento boxes are huge!!! Plus the people are friendlier. :o) You've got to try it!

Good Japanese food
By ,
The food quality is very good for the price. Parking is relatively limited because it is on a busy street. You can't beat their specials. Service is very good also. Relatively small, though, so not good for large groups. I highly recommend.
