Fernando's Mexican Restaurant, San Mateo

We love this place. We have had many family parties and it has always been great. The patrons are of all possible ages from couples with children, to office parties, to retired couples. The days when the Mariachis are playing, people do have a lot of fun. The bar area with food and TV attracts one of the nicest all ages group I have seen. Because we have been going to Fernando s for over 20 years, I appreciate the fact that it never became commercialized and expensive. I keeps the homemade character that we like. J.R. Argüello

My husband and I ate there after we were looking for different Mexican places. I did not like it. The food was very bland. I think there are better places to go. If I am going to an ethnic restaurant, I want there to be someone eating there who is of their origin. There were only older white people eating there. Not a good sign. You want Mexican with flavor, go down B Street!

Me and my co-workers go there about every other week. Try the chimichanga, the cheese is like molten lava, so great! The Tortilla soup is also very tasty, and the salsa is hands down. Of course its not a fast service place, so give yourself some time and enjoy the service, which is great!

I go here all the time and the food is just average Mexican food. I usually get the deluxe tostada salad which is about $11 and fairly healthy. The daily specials are pretty good deals ($12 - $14) but nothing special. I think the best thing they make is the Enchilada Mole. However, they make the very best Margaritas around.

I love Fernandos. We've been going there for years. Excellent food and service and they are always consistent. Has a nice neighborhood restaurant feel to it too.

Close to Hillsdale CalTrain, Fernandos is the place where I meet friends when half are coming form San Jose and other half are coming from SF since its about midway between the two. The daily dinner specials are the best value ($2 off when ordered on the appropriate day). This time I had the Carnitas de puerco which is deep fried cubes of pork that aren't greasy and just jiucy enough on the inside. The entire wait staff are very cordial, funny and likely to push another margarita on you if your current one is empty.
