Shiki Japanese Restaurant, San Mateo

The wife and I have started going to Shiki Sushi on Saturdays. The food is very good and there is a nice selection that is well prepared and presented. The service is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is clean and convienent for us next to Whole Foods Market @ Hillsdale. Our overall experience is very good. We will continue to make it a regular for lunch.

This is a very good Japanese restaurant. I've eaten at Shiki several times and the food has always been good, fresh, and well prepared. While there aren't a lot of tables,I've never had to wait to be seated. That said, once seated, service can be on the slow side, so if you need to be somewhere by a certain time, best not to dine here. If you have the time to spend, though, you'll find it an excellent place to eat for a reasonable price. They have some really good sushi items as well as the standard chicken, steak and fish dishes.

I just wish they were open longer... we find that they close fairly early. But then again so does everything else in San Mateo. Great Place though!! Highly recommended.

We recently ordered some food to go from Shiki. The sushi was very fresh and there was a good balance between rice and the other items (some other places can overwhelm you with too much rice). (The exception to the freshness seemed to be the wasabi, which seemed very muted to us.) I ordered my meal for takeout, and the very pleasant woman who took my order said it would take 25 minutes. It was just about double that before I got my food. I drove down to Comp USA to return something, drove all the way back and still ended up waiting 20 minutes after all that. So while the food was worth the wait, this is not a safe bet if you're in a rush.

I like this business because it is very friendly service. They provided best food qualities for less than right price. No smokers in that restaurant. They have Sushi bar with television and you can watch the man making your Sushi. They also have nice setting for the families, dating, for few friends, small business meeting. Every week they have some special menus like Oysters, Tunas, Crabs and etc. They always provide the fresh foods from the sea. They also have Japanese's import beers. I went there for like 20 times a year. By the way I am deaf and they meet my deaf needs and that is wonderful of them! That business is not for the tourist people. Therefore they make big foods and for right price for the hard workers in San Mateo. I would recommend you to eat their special oyster sushi. I always ordered the teriyaki beef or chicken, tuna/salmon/shrimp sushi and soup just for about $16.50.
