Usually one has to go to a large city to have this service, cuisine and ambience. For a special occasion, it is such a gem. The chef's choice menu was very amazing: Butter poached lobster in shallot marmalade, grilled Swordfish, Squab, Kobe Beef and a Marscapone Blackberry mouse. It is expensive. We truly enjoyed it.
I have never been so disappointed in my life. I remember 231 from years back when it was the finest restaurant in the area. I should have picked up a hint when we walked in at 7:30 to a totally empty restaurant. All eve there was only one other table occupied. They have gone to a fixed menu but with prices that vary with your entry. So dinner, with the cheapest wine and tip, runs 100.00 to 150.00/person. Plus the food is prepared by an artist, who cant cook. Their ad says Valet parking, but there is no valet parking. When we complained about the fixed menu they told us we could simply order the items we wanted. They didnt tell us we still had to pay the full fixed price for items we didnt order. So we paid 100.00 for soup and an entry. Dont be suckered into the ads for this restaurant.

My wife and I went to 231 Ellsworth on the strength of glowing reviews, and were disappointed. Perhaps it had simply been oversold, but we thought that the food did not justify the extreme pricing.
Don't get me wrong: I don't mind paying a lot for an incredible meal, but this was not an incredible meal, merely a very nice meal. The experience didn't match the bill.
I have been to 231 Ellsworth many times, and I have to say that it is my favorite restaurant for fine dinning. Do yourself a treat and order the five course tasting menu with the wine paring. You will not find a better experience anywhere! If one of the items is not really what you want, just ask and they will gladly change it. (My wife won't eat wild) I have not tried the Vegetarian option, but I just might next time. The wine paring are perfect too. Take a few hours to really enjoy it and treat it as an adventure. You will thank me..
