Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers
We are proud to serve Niman Ranch all-natural ground chuck. Barney's and Niman Ranch understand that the secret to great beef is the combination of breed, feed, care and age. It's the special attention to these details that make a great hamburger.
Barney's is good in that they have milkshakes (unlike Bullshead in West Portal) and have other options (unlike Burger Joint). However, Bullshead grinds their own meat and has the option of 1/3 or 1/2 pound burgers. They also offer steaks, turkey burgers, buffalo burgers, chicken sandwiches, a salad bar, etc,. Burger Joint (which services Niman Ranch) has the most limited menu of the three; a burger plain or w/cheese (or a mini version), chicken sandwich, hot dog, gardenburger, shakes, fries, sodas. Both cut their own fries. Barney's has nicer decor, a large menu and curly fries if that's important to you but overall I place them third when it comes to burgers and fries.
I've been to Barney's only twice, the first time to the 24th Street location, and then, recently, to Steiner Street. The burger at Steiner Street was one of the best burgers I have ever encountered. It was rare, per my order, and it was a pesto burger. Perfect. While I was waiting in line for the restroom, I asked a server to recommend his favorite burgers, and he informed that the Baja and Pesto burgers are the best ones. Pesto is indeed good. I had a Hawaiian at 24th Street, and it was just okay. The fries at Steiner Street, both mine, with garlic and cilantro, and my friend's, just steak fries, were perfect as well.
The service was great. Beer only comes in a bottle. They have a patio. What else -- parking is awful, but there's a garage around the corner. 3.9
I would not recommend it for anything else. The chicken sandwiches are all really drab - plain chicken is not marinated or spiced up at all, and the toppings are usually pretty lackluster. I am not a big fan of their turkey burgers either. My husband loves the beef burgers though, as well as the onion rings. I like to skip the main course and go straight for the deliciously thick milkshakes. Great outdoor patio too.
