This large, upscale Sunset market has a lot to offer. Clean, pleasant, and filled with gourmet groceries. You will find everything you could possibly need including health, organic and bulk foods, beer and spirits. Why cook when this market offers a deli and rotisserie counter filled with fresh pastas, salad, side dishes, and healthy meat dishes? The seafood is also extensive with shellfish, fresh and saltwater fishes. One of the largest collection of microbrews in The City is an added plus. Although it is more expensive than traditional grocery stores, you get higher quality goods.
Considering the extraordinary prices you would think they would offer extraordinary service; unfortunately, that is not the case. There are exceptions--the people at the deli are friendly--but most seem really unhappy to be there and are sloppy and offer no excuses for it. I tend to not shop here because of that, and because they forced the city to apply 1 hour parking all around their building, but the last time I went there, in an emergency, they charged me for two bottles of wine instead of the one on the conveyor belt and when I pointed it out the cashier looked at me as if I had caused his mistake. He didn't know (or seem to want to know) how to fix it, and had to call the manager (who didn't apologize either). You should be forewarned also that their heater directly hits the top of the wine racks and some of the bottles are almost hot....
This is the sad excuse the Sunset has to offer in place of a Whole Foods. Their products are expensive, and there's a huge lack of selection. Their meat isle is especially lacking as the only grass-fed beef I was able to buy one day is pre-chopped for beef stew. Also, the only organic anything in terms of protein was chicken.
This grocery provides a great experience; well maintained shelves, bright airy atmosphere, nice attendants, and a variety of choices; from Florist to deli, bakery and cafe. However daily shopping for basic basket items rings in at a high price. Go to Andronico's for your Sunday dinner, but for your daily bread head to Trader Joes.
