Mama's on Washington Square

Description

Mama's on Washington Square has long queues that will keep you waiting on the sidewalk for half an hour. But once you are inside and seated, be prepared for a great breakfast that puts the wait in perspective. Mama's has been around for almost 50 years and it has aged gracefully to say the least. On the menu you will find eleven different omelets and French toasts made from different types of bread. Make sure you try their home-made jams. Mama's also serves lunch, that too in generous quantities. Try the Monte Cristo which has turkey, ham, cheddar cheese in bread dipped in egg white and grilled.

Sweet? Spicy? anything but ordinary. It's not the average, way above. No wonder it's a long wait to get in, and worth every minute. It's a vacation type breakfast, big and wonderful meal. Anyone who says they'd rather make their own breakfast should stay at home. Can't wait to visit SF again, and hope I can bring a friend.

We went in April 2010. I read the previous reviews and was extremely excited about trying out a different restaurant in SF. The wait wasn't too bad. Although my Niece thought it was too long. Ordering is confusing if you haven't eaten there before. The food was okay. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worse. We had the 2 egg with ham - Okay; Crab omelete with swiss cheese - Good (Very Pricey); French toast (Just because we had to taste em) - Okay... The prices were very high! Service was okay! I guess I am a little spoiled, because I prefer to eat at home and make my own breakfasts, which includes omelete and/or french toast.. I dont know that I would ever return or just try out one of the many awesome restaurants. As I said, it was just okay! The potatoes were burnt, the jam was good. Sour dough toast was very Hard.

I went here for the first time in April 2008. It was pretty good actually! It was highly recommended by my BFF. Although being 9 months pregnant, the wait wasn't THATTT bad... The service and quality of food made up for it. Can't wait to go back in a few weeks with some girlfriends.

THE BEST PLACE TO HAVE BREAKFAST! One of my good friends from culinary school introduced me to Mama's and after the 1st visit it became a fix. GREAT FOOD, GOOD PEOPLE, GOOD SERVICE. The longest I've waited in line was for about 15 minutes, but Mama's is worth waiting much longer than that. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming and I can't wait to go back.

Mama's is worth the wait. This cozy, cute breakfast spot has very good comfort food. The line can get really long, about 45min to hour wait,so grab something to drink before you stand in line. The crab benedict is REALLY GOOD. I highly recommend this place to anyone with time, and appetite while in SF:)

Food network recommended this place and saw all the reviews... it was a nice walk from Fisherman's wharf and had to wait about 30 minutes to get in the first morning. I did read the reviews about the wait, so my daughter and I were prepared. It was well worth the wait. She ordered the Choc/Cin French toast which she absolutely loved and I had the best Shrimp and Avocado Eggs Benedict. The people were super nice and helpful. They even stored my stroller for me below, since the restaurant itself is a bit small but cozy inside. My daughter and I agreed that we would return the next morning to try some of the other amazing things they had on the menu. We were please to see there was no line. We made it just before the line started. Just lucky...I hear it happens some times...still, we would have waited happily. I had the Banana Nut French Toast and she had the Apple one. Once again, it was a home run for both of us. We were greeted with smiles and our order came up pretty quick. I do enjoy looking at what others order because everything looks good! It makes me wish we had more days here to be able to try everything on the menu. Definitely worth going!

We went around 11AM on weekday to avoid the crowd. Fortunately, there were no lines outside the restaurant (as on weekends), but we did have to wait about 15 minutes inside to get a seat. I can see why the place is so popular. Inside is very cozy and feels homely. Service was prompt and coffee refills were generous. Food is not much different than other American breakfast/brunch places, but the freshness of the ingredients were noticeably better. I had Eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was very good, and the eggs tasted very fresh. It's definitely worth checking out, but probably not if it means standing in line for more than an hour.
