Mama's on Washington Square

Description

Mama's on Washington Square has long queues that will keep you waiting on the sidewalk for half an hour. But once you are inside and seated, be prepared for a great breakfast that puts the wait in perspective. Mama's has been around for almost 50 years and it has aged gracefully to say the least. On the menu you will find eleven different omelets and French toasts made from different types of bread. Make sure you try their home-made jams. Mama's also serves lunch, that too in generous quantities. Try the Monte Cristo which has turkey, ham, cheddar cheese in bread dipped in egg white and grilled.

Never again
By ,
I was sitting with my visiting friend from Canada catching up on a years worth of conversation when the guy who seated us came over and asked us to leave. He said that we were done eating and they needed the table. Only an hour had passed. There was no line outside and available tables inside so there was no excuse for his completely inappropriate and bad manners. From now we'll be taking our business elsewhere.

I went here for the first time in April 2008. It was pretty good actually! It was highly recommended by my BFF. Although being 9 months pregnant, the wait wasn't THATTT bad... The service and quality of food made up for it. Can't wait to go back in a few weeks with some girlfriends.

Best breakfast in North Beach
Just about the best breakfast around, especially the french toast and bacon. Julia Childs would eat there all the time (I hear from locals) so that's a strong reccomendation. The waiting line can get a little long on weekend mornings, but it's worth the wait.

Great but expensive breakfast in North Beach
By ,
Great breakfast spot in North Beach but there are lines at times. I recommend going Tuesday - Thursday around 8 or 9 am to beat the lines. If you have to go on the weekends make sure you go early in the a.m. If you are there past 10 a.m. then you will have deal with blazing early morning sun. They make really good omlets and french toast. I recommend the french toast with fresh fruit and coffee

Food network recommended this place and saw all the reviews... it was a nice walk from Fisherman's wharf and had to wait about 30 minutes to get in the first morning. I did read the reviews about the wait, so my daughter and I were prepared. It was well worth the wait. She ordered the Choc/Cin French toast which she absolutely loved and I had the best Shrimp and Avocado Eggs Benedict. The people were super nice and helpful. They even stored my stroller for me below, since the restaurant itself is a bit small but cozy inside. My daughter and I agreed that we would return the next morning to try some of the other amazing things they had on the menu. We were please to see there was no line. We made it just before the line started. Just lucky...I hear it happens some times...still, we would have waited happily. I had the Banana Nut French Toast and she had the Apple one. Once again, it was a home run for both of us. We were greeted with smiles and our order came up pretty quick. I do enjoy looking at what others order because everything looks good! It makes me wish we had more days here to be able to try everything on the menu. Definitely worth going!

Loooooong wait, good food
By ,
I waited about 45 minutes here, which is probably a little better than the average wait time. Every Sunday, I see a line down the block for this place. The food is quite good, though it didn't change my life. I've had better home-cooked breakfasts/brunches, to be totally honest. But if you have about two hours to kill and are dying for one of the best breakfasts/brunches in town, this would be a good bet.

Historic

Well, it is. Mentioned in fiction as well as non-fiction books, Mama's is somewhat of a tourist's landmark when visiting San Francisco. Unfortunately, that means lines. LONG lines. The food's good. Borderline great. If memory serves me correctly, it's cash only. You can bank on a wait of at least 1.5 hours, easily. I say, there's yummier places to be found. Try Dottie's True Blue Cafe. I'm a true FAN.

By far my favorite place in the bay area to eat brunch. Unfortunately, it's almost always a 45 min to hour wait in order to get in and seated. The Monte Cristo is one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had anywhere. Perfect combination of Turkey, Ham, and cheeses. The omelettes are also very good - and dollar pancakes on the side to round out the meal. Be sure to try out their jam on your toast or pancakes - it's delicious.

Long lines Sat/Sun morning so get there early. Worth the wait for delicious baked goodies and a traditional breakfast/brunch menu.
