The name Helmand comes from one of the most beautiful states in Afghanistan. It is best known by it"s river "Helmand River" which flows through the desert region, providing water diverted for irrigation. Helmand Palace is owned and operated independently where you can taste Afghan's most famous and delicious dishes, soups, and vegetables. Our popular entrees include char-broiled leg of Lamb marinated in puree of onion, sun-dried baby grapes and garlic, served with sauteed eggplant and pallow rice or homemade pastry shells filled with onions and beef, served on yogurt and topped with carrots, yellow split-peas and beef sauce.
I used to eat there when they were on Broadway. I just ate there tonite, and the Aushak, Kaddo & Seek Kabob are just as I remembered-- simply wonderful. Everything is fresh. We had three baskets of bread, which was excellent. I'm not great at describing the dishes, but I will see that our party cleared our plates!
The service a very good and I actually think there location on Van Ness is easier to access. I'm definitely going back.
I recommend the pumpkin appetizer--it was delicious! The rice dish with carrots and raisins was also rather tasty, and all 5 of us enjoyed our meals. The atmosphere is also ideal, as it is beautiful and quiet and spacious. The only detracting elements were that the service could have been just a bit more prompt and the desserts tastier. Those minor things will not prevent me from recommending this place to my friends.
