Description

Many native San Franciscans will tell you that this restaurant serves the best hamburgers in The City. An all-American family restaurant with a clean dining room, it's often bustling with activity. Fresh vegetables and healthy cooking make this restaurant a leader in preparing California Cuisine. A variety of grilled and roasted chicken dishes are served. And don't miss the locally famous polenta dishes that are available with a variety of toppings. Tasty pasta dishes that change daily are also on the menu. The service is first-rate.

Wonderful food!
By ,
Been eating here for years for brunch and dinner. The faces have changed but the food has remained consistently wonderful. Try the Chicken Piccata - it is the best anywhere.

Bright and Cute
By ,
This restaurant has been one of my favorites for years. The owners have changed recently but the food is still just as good. They never use any trans fats in the foods and the salads are always fresh and delicious. The desserts are also a must. If ever in the neighborhood , this restaurant is a must

Will never eat here again
By ,
Like some of the other reviewers, I have eaten lunch, and or dinner here for over 20 years, and it has been my favorite place, until now. I called to ask if they would be open on New Years Eve, and thought I would catch an early movie at the Empire, and then eat dinner there. Well I am learning to walk again, I fell and ruptured the quadricep tendons in both legs, and use a walker although sometimes I can use a cane. When I called they never said they took reservations, and I have never known them to in the past. However when I arrived about 7 pm,many tables had reserved signs on them, (the place was not crowded), the only seat offered to me was a middle table between 2 other tables with 2 diners each. I asked how I was supposed to sit there, having a walker and was told they did not know. I was finally offered a table near the front on the end which was the ideal place, however this was not offered initially, until I said I could not sit at the middle table with the other diners, which would have been inconvenient, and uncomfortable for them. The host did not seem to think anything of the fact I just walked out, and did not seem to care. For a restaurant which used to be packed, people standing in line, and now is so sparse I wondered it they were closed. I will never eat here again, and don't know why they have taken this attitude, with a lot of elderly, and handicapped in the area, this place is on it's way out. Very sad. Rob Walker San Francisco

Food is great, service stinks!
By ,
We have been eating at this restaurant for over 20 years and have always enjoyed the food and the fantastic wait staff. The new owners have kept the same wonderful food - they use good high quality fruits and vegetables, create delicious salads; excellent pasta, fish and poultry; the best french fries and desserts to die for. However, the staff has changed and they are not service oriented. No mater how good the food, the service has to be good to keep customers coming back. Lately the restaurant is not crowded like it used to be and we are afraid that if customers keep dropping off then the restaurant will probably close. A plea to the current owners, bring back the service staff who cared and have a hostess who knows how to seat people properly.

Service
By ,
I have eaten on three ocassions since new ownership, and though the food is excellent the service , attitude of staff is horrible. they rush you throughout the meal, serving the main course before your finished with the starter. In addition staff consyantly put you on defensive when asking about this new protocol. My recommendation eat some where else.

will never go back
By ,
I siply did not get a chance to even be seated at this place. I went to this cafe around 1pm with a friend of mine and my child who is 7 month old and at that time was sleeping in the stroller. Cafe was less than half-full. THe hostess did not let us in because of the stroller. The way I look at it: there was not that many peaple in the cafe, and they could've accomodate us. What if there was a disabled person in the wheelchair, or an elderly with a walker??? Whould they also be asked to leave? How rediculous!!!!!

Great food!!!
By ,
This restaurant is one of my favorite places for lunch and dinner. The salads are amazing and the desserts are great too. Although there is not much privacy because the tables are close together and the the restaurant gets noisy, it is worth it for the food and the service. After a short battle with trying to change their menu over the summer, they have reverted back to the majority of the original fare and added some other bonuses. I like the pasta in during lunch and their fish entrees for dinner...

Clean, Noisey and Pricey
By ,
I've been eating here for 20 years. The menu has changed very little - except for the ongoing price climb in a neighborhood that realistically won't bear the prices. Yes, it's noisey, the seats are far too close to one another offering little intimacy and personal privacy for conversation. And.. and this is a BIG and, as of 7/05, they have removed vegetables from the dinner entrees. I ordered the Chicken Picatta expecting to get my usual steamed vegetables and my substitution of mashed potatoes for pasta (I'm gluten intolerant). What did I get: 2 pieces of grilled chicken drowning in a RIVER of butter-laden sauce, no vegetables, and a separate bowl of luke-warm potatoes, which took FOREVER to be served despite a small crowd. PRICE with NO beverage and a 12% tip (I was pissed.) $25. WRONG! You've just lost a 20 year customer!!!
