Izzy's Steaks & Chops

Description

Izzy Gomez's story typifies that of living the American dream. The Portuguese native headed to San Francisco with nothing but passion, minus any monetary backing. In 1987, Izzy's Steaks & Chops opened its doors in the heart of Marina neighborhood on the birthday of the man himself. Steak is the main draw here, although there are excellent seafood and chops made from market-fresh ingredients. Their bar prides itself on creative concoctions and an impressive list of spirits. This restaurant has much of a traditional boys club feel to it. With dim lighting, no-nonsense service and lacquered fish among lots of San Francisco memorabilia donning the walls, this is a quintessential example of an American steakhouse and promises an unrivaled experience in the Bay Area. It also claims that many times artists have bartered one of their paintings for the sake of a meal here. Today, these artworks are part and parcel of the eatery's decor. Now, what would you trade for dinner?

The recommended steak: Filet Mignon Medallions Au Poivre The tasting: Pretty good. I've never eaten here and been disappointed. But since I discovered Bobquivari's, I can't say I've been back here. It's a very good steak, especially au poivre. The sides: The creamed spinach is always very solid. There's nothing special done to it, and that's okay. It's a dish that lives on its own for me. The wine: The best wine I ever ate here was priced in the thousands. We had to fill up my boss' black AmEx card so he didn't lose it, and we went to town. It was fantastic. One day, I'll figure out what it was. I think it was $2500.

Not Bad but Does NOT deserve this rating. Better, more flavorful steaks can be found at Bobo's and Alfred's.

This place is the best value in town! The steaks are great-and the prices are reasonable. My favorite whenever I'm in San Francisco-I wouldn't leave without first going there!

I recommend this steakhouse to everyone. I had the best prime rib steak yet. And this is compared to NC and MI. The wait wasn't long on our food and the service was great. And don't forget to try their house chessey potatoes. Awesome!

Had the greatest steak dinner of my life at Izzy's.The filet mignon melts in your mouth and the creamed spinach and Izzy's own potatoes are a must as the sides. Give the bartender a good tip because he makes the best martinis! The atmosphere in the restaurant is casual and cozy, just like you are having dinner with a restaurant full of your closest friends. When I move to San Francisco, I plan to be a regular at Izzy's.

We go to Izzy's to celebrate anything. The food is always great, prepared as you ask for it. We have never had a problem with service but some days are better than others. We can't recommend the desserts because we never have room for them.
