Hordes of people travel out to the end of the Avenues to enjoy top-notch Vietnamese-fusion cuisine for reasonable prices, so make your reservations early. Thanh Long restaurant is run by the same family who owns Crustacean (L.A. and S.F.) and features the same delectable menu. Of course, no visit is complete without sampling the famous Roast Crab or the garlic-infused noodles. Bartender Graham, a Thanh Long institution, is a master of his art and the drinks show it. Please see the website for further information.
Let me start off by saying the food, especially the roasted crabs and the garlic noodles are a great combination. However, after several visits, my friends and I noticed the roasted crabs are getting a little too greasy and salty. Nevertheless, it's still the best choice in the menu. The disappointed factors about this place is the physical atmosphere. First, its their aisle table. There seem to be too many foot traffic. It's difficult to enjoy your meal when you have to be cautious of someone bumping into you while walking along the aisle. If you think the aisle table is bad. Wait until you are seated on the table against the wall. Almost every tables are just too closed to one another. Again, it's difficult to enjoy a decent, yet opened conversation among friends when ones have to worry about the table next to you may eves-dropped on your conversation. My friends and I noticed one, perhaps two very disappointed factors on the upper level table next to the stair-well. The couple table next to the stair-well has a derogatory grafity underneath the table. I'm not going to get into detail, but let's just say it was a semi-racist sign that was tagged on. Another one was the rail along the stair-well, it was just an ugly dirty sight. I mean the rail was covered in dust! This makes me wonder how often do they perform house cleaning. They should know that these factors can affect someone's appetite or perhaps even being a patriot. With that said, my friends and I now very seldomly visit this place, only when we craved for a good crab.
OVER PRICED. THE CRAB WAS GOOD GARLIC NOODLES WAS GREAT . TO BAD EVERY THING IS ITEM PRICED. I DIDN'T HAVE ANY ELSE ON THE MENU BECAUSE I HAD BEEN LOOKING FORWARD FOR MAYBE 5YEARS EVERYONE I KNEW TALK ABOUT HOW GOOD THE CRAB WAS, SO MY EXPECT ATION WAS REALLY HIGHT. WHAT A LET DOWN. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THEY HAD THE CRAB,AND GARLIC NOODLES TOGETHER FOR THE SAME PRICE AS THE CRAB ALONE,
I'd heard about Crustacean and the crab, so some people recommended trying out Thanh Long for their crab and Tossed Beef. I ate with a group of 4 people and we had a great time. The Garlic Noodles were excellent, we ended up ordering more. The Tossed Beef was good - the beef itself wasn't as tender as I'd like but the flavoring was great - and the crab was definitely top notch.
The inside and decor of the restaurant was okay - seemed a little dated, but the food here is what you come for!
The garlic roasted crab and garlic noodles are of course the best thing on the menu. However, you must try the crab puffs, combination rice, and the villager's favorite (carmelized pork & prawns in a claypot). If you think that the crab and garlic noodles is all they have to offer, you should dig a little dipper, and try other things.
Eating roast crab and garlic noodles is a fun experience particularly when you get there early and don't have to wait in line (we arrived at 5:30 and were seated right away). However, the food was heavy so try to order some light food as well since the crab and the noodles are a bit too oily for one meal. All in all, delicious and great service.
I like the roast crab and garlic noodles...yummy! They are so busy that sometimes the food comes luke warm and you may have to send it back for a warm-up but it is truely delicious! I don't like that you are sometimes seated so close to the people next to you that you have to tame your conversation, there really is no privacy or seclusion. I would definately recommend it to anyone! Make reservations! The waiting area is so small that you feel like a sardine!
Boy this is the best garlicky roasted crab and garlicky noodles I have ever had. I love the restaurant and the servicers is good too. We are usually a party of 10 (every other month)so it is great fun. My auntie comes here from Hawaii and this is where we have to take her for dinner everytime without fail. Oh, and the fried banana and ice cream yummy! I think this place is great for chowing down. Everyone gets quiet when the food is served.
I was a frequent visitor (bi-weekly) when I lived in SF roughly 10 years ago. As it turned out I was alergic to something I was eating, but I loved the crab and garlic noodles so much I went back anyway. So, next week will be by first time back since I moved way back then and the thing I am looking forward to the most is dinner at Thanh Long!!
