Betelnut Restaurant, San Francisco

We thoroughly enjoyed the variety and unique dishes served here!!!! Well worth a visit - and we'll definitely return to Betelnut on our next visit to SF!!!!

I used to live three doors down from Betelnut. I got xferred to NC 2 years ago and am still having withdrawals from this place. Every time I go to SF, Betelnut is a must. I read some reviews about it being overpriced...but I found that everything in SF and even California is overpriced and price is no guarantee of quality there, but not at Betelnut. It may be pricey, but it's good food, atmosphere, etc.

They were very busy but it was a great place. FOOD was the best because it was well prepared and so original. It was a great experience with friends and great people around. It was high $$$$ but it was prob cause we ordered everything we saw go by us to other tables:)

Is it worth the hype? Yes.

Overrated, expensive and underwhelming. Loud atmosphere, unknowledgable server and the food was below average. Save some money and go to Clement St. Yawn.....

Always great food, The atmosphere is great and when ever we have guest in town we always visit Betelnut, The service should be complimented as well. Two thumbs up!

Although a tad pricey, I really enjoyed this restaurant! I tried a bunch of different dishes, and I was impressed with them all (especially the Halibut with chilis...try it!). Very fun atmosphere and good drinks too. Popular scene, good for a friend group.

I live in New York and I still fantasize about this restaurant... I wish they had a Long Island location... I would be dining there ALL THE TIME! Flawless menu... EVERYTHING is divine!

I've heard a lot of good things about betelnut and can see why. The dishes offered on the menu vary widely and cover a wide spread of asian countries. The dishes they select are done well, but not exceptional. A lot of attention was payed to presentation of the dishes which adds a little flare. As far as the food itself, the dishes I sampled were good, but not as good as I expected. Compared to specific asian restaurants, I wouldn't say the dishes are as good. They get very close to authentic and do enlist some fusion influence. They offer a wide variety of sake drinks and foo foo drinks which makes it a popular place to hang out. Awesome place to people watch and eat outside.

From the beginning Betelnut was a battle. The hostess was rude and bossy. We asked the bartender for a menu so we could order appetizers and he forgot to bring it. When seated, we ordered two chicken dishes and the waiter only placed one with the kitchen. Also, we specifically asked that the mango chuttney from one of our dishes be included in the to go box � it was not. The food was ok but not outstanding. On the plus side there's a fun, lively bar and great Asian decor. Also noteworthy is the creative layout which includes stools with a kitchen view, outside seating with a view of Union, and a comfortable dining room.
