For hundreds of years in the bustling cities and fragrant harbors of Asia a favorite and familiar place to savor distinctive local dishes has been the side street beer house, or pejiu wu. Here, large mugs of beer complement emphatically fresh and tantalizing "street food" made with fresh local ingredients and regional spices that tend to be on the hotter side.
We walked in the restaurant and the two hostesses did not even acknowledge our presence. We had to ask twice for a table and had to wait even though there were several tables available. RUDE HOSTESS, we ended up leaving. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME EATING THERE IT IS NOT WORTH IT! There are too many other great restaurants in san francisco.
I'm from the Los Angeles area and have been there several times now throughout the years and I can always expect the same wonderful yummy food! Ask for the rock salt and pepper ribs...it's not on the menu but if you ask they'll probably make them if they aren't too busy. Some of the tables are a bit close but other than that the ambience is quite nice.
betelnut is always bustling, and the atmosphere is cute: pseudo chinatown by way of hollywood. the food is just so-so--kind of like pf chang's--but people really come here to have drinks and see the scene. it's a fun place to hang out, but it's a little spendy for what it is.
Great menu selection and good Asian/Chinese food. In my opinion, some dishes are very greasy so I stick to a steamed dumplings and very tasty green beans. Reservation highly recommended. Parking can be difficult on Union Street; however, you can park across the street in a parking garage: don't forget to validate your parking ticket at Betelnut to get their flat -cheap- fee.
The food was fabulous, the drinks were great, the service was perfect, the ambiance was hip, and the sidewalk tables were by far, the best view in town to peopel-watch (and heated too). It was my first time eating at Betelnut, but it won't be my last. Highly recommended!
