House of Nanking

Description

Reservations are not accepted at this extremely popular place, and it is one reason you will see lines snaking around the block to get in here. The other reason is the food. Though some might decry the less than immaculate interior, there are plenty who say proclaim House of Nanking as the best Chinese food in San Francisco, if not California. The Imperial Rolls are extraordinary, full of first-rate fresh vegetables and succulent BBQ pork in a crispy, non-greasy wrapper. Hot and Sour Chicken or Beef in Garlic Sauce and Tofu with Curry are also favorites. Call for further details.

We ate at about 4 pm because we were hungry then and the place was almost empty...We ordered the pot sticker appetizer which was good, not great. My friend's meal came 10 minutes before mine and the rice in between. His Nanking chicken was okay, not too heavily fried and tasty enough. My garlic scallops came on a plate covered with spinach leaves that all had long stems and some were unwashed looking and others should not have been served at all (bruised and dead looking). Underneath them was what appeared to be about 3 medium sized scallops sliced reed thin into about 9 -12 pieces in a thin soy/ginger sauce with whole cloves of garlic thrown in. A meal that I would not have served to anyone in my home. The waiter seemed somewhere between apathetic and surly, he never inquired about our food once he had served it. I ordered wine and my friend had water, he brought only 1 water... When I went to find the bathroom (there is only one) there was a chair in front of it and the waiter said "no, broken". Empty boxes lined the floor in front of the kitchen next to guest tables. Don't waste your money. It certainly didn't add up to what our tour bus driver called "the best Chinese restaurant in town"!!!!

Went to House of Nanking during recent trip to the city. Was NOT disappointed! Been a number of years. Still a line, crowded but food was very good. Had the calamari, seseme chicken, potstickers, scallops, chow main. No problems with our service. Last went there when it was just a little hole in the wall, kind of like that better.

Arguably the best Chinese food I've ever had. Definitely the best pot stickers (although stay away if you're allergic to peanuts) It's a small place and can get crowded but the management does a good job of pushing lingerers along.

Ha! I went to this place way back in the mid 90's on the advice of one of the best chefs in Seattle and my gf and I both got FOOD POISONING!! We changed our flight and stayed an extra day in our hotel room to recover. I want to some divine restaurants on that trip but I've forgotten all of their names, but I'll never forget the house of Nanking!

We were very excited to go back, we went there about 10 years ago and the food and service was great. WHAT A DISASTER this place has become, the food was below grade and the service was greatly lacking. All of our food dishes came at diffrent time's, with the rice comming last after the meal was done. We were very disapointed in everything after wanting to go back. Needless t say we will not be going back. There are so many better places to go.

This place is a tourist trap! Do not bother to wait in line. Go to Brandy Ho's instead for wonderful food. Locals NEVER eat here!

I believe this has undergone a change of ownership. The food is still great, and the prices really good. Expect long lines out the door if you arrive at peak hours.

Pretty decent Chinese food, but a bit overpriced for what it is. Seems like a big draw for non-Chinese palettes.

Don't know why this is so popular with tourist. It's such a fad to have abusive service, greasy food, and hole in the wall decor. It's definitely memorable to be there, but not in a good way. As a native Chinese, this restaurant is an embarrassing representation of our food or culture.
