Da Flora

Description

Venetian-style cuisine is the specialty here and the decor reflects that city's Carnival festivities. Inside there is a cornucopia of colorful Italian art pieces that liven up the bright dining room tended by a personable and efficient wait staff. The menu is small, usually featuring fish and meat that are offered along with the antipasti, rich soups and crispy salads. The preparation of everything is vibrant, and the house-made breads and desserts are some of the finest to be found in the city. The wine list is small but select with Italian and California vintages.

I can't comment on the food since my party did not stay long enough to eat. The service was so poor that after being left for 20 minutes after seating and w/o having our orders taken we gave up and left and the restraunt was not especially busy. the staff simply doesnt care at all. they are poorly dressed and indifferent at best. if serve means anything this place isn't for you.

Succulent Food and Service that Grows on You
By ,
This might seem contradictory but this is a place that you frequent for the Chef's tasty Venezian specials and the spicy service from Flora herself. Owner operated defines this quaint little gem with a small intimate diningroom more like your great aunt's parlor in a New York brownstone. Columbus Avenue flows just outside the large windows and lighting is flattering to those in love with the ambience favoring quiet conversation. Cell Phones Off. Flora loves to suggest a wine for your meal personally, usually has a special and she has never steered us wrong. The effort and design goes into the menu and preparation. Flora gives you the feeling she doesn't do anything unless it is fun, so tread lightly and enjoy the character and characters in this cozy diningroom.

Very poor service and expensive!
By ,
I read the good reviews (which the employees must have written) and tried Da Flora. What a disappointment. I travel often, and as a result I eat at many restaurants. This was one of the worst I have experienced in a very long time. To be specific, the service was very slow, rude, I had to ask for water, bread, pepper, just about anything you want, you have to ask. Better restaurants will offer you water and fill your glass without asking. Food: very small portions, expensive, warm- almost cool food. I paid $320 dollars for four of us and I wish I went to a restaurant that appreciated us and took care of us. Many other restaurants in North Beach that would fall over you for $320 dollars.

The restuarant we always come back to!
By ,
Out of all the amazing restaurants in San Francisco, this is our favorite. It is an intimate and romantic restaurant with excellent, creative, fresh food. You almost feel like you're eating in someone's home - the menus are hand written and change daily and the staff know the food and wine inside and out. To make the evening ever more special, take a cable car to Da Flora. Take the Powell-Mason cable car line and get off at Columbus - Da Flora's just down the street!

Better than Venezia!
By ,
We had a great meal at Da Flora last week and are going back with friends next week. All the food was fresh, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. I had the halibut, and have been disapointed at other restaurants more than once due to it being overcooked. The staff was on top of things and freindly as well. Better food at Da Flora than anything I was ever presented with in Venice (and I'm not talking about Venice Beach). TLH

Please don't tell anyone about this place!
By ,
I have had the pleasure to eat at da Flora's probably two dozen times, and never been disappointed. Go there without pretension and accept it for what it is, the expression of Flora and Mary Beth's world view. I felt like a member of their extended family and rate my many times there right along with the various Zagat's Wine Spectator Michelin yadda-yadda places I have been to. The food is terrific.

incredible food!
By ,
My husband and I were looking for a restaurant before going to a show and we were fortunate to find this lovely intimate place. The food was wonderful, service was unpretentious and the ambiance was perfect. We look forward to going back soon.

OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT
By ,
A real gem in a City with many fine restaurants. I can't understand why it is not in Zagat's (I'd give it a 27 for the food!) It is small, romantic, with fabulous food and a phenomenal wine list - let Flora choose your wine, you can't go wrong.

Best in town
By ,
This small charming restaurant with it's wine colored walls, low lighting and linen tables is informal and romantic. The service is knowlegable and friendly and you can feel the love. There's thought, pride and passion in every dish. This restaurant rivals the best, but doesn't come with canned corporate decor or cater to the Connie Sewer's in town. Great food, hand-picked wine list and great setting - complete dining experience can't be better - it's up to you to bring the right company.

Best Italian in SF... no question
By ,
Finally getting some recognition among the all too mercurial restaurant press in SF, Da Flora has for years been serving up some of the most outstanding and inventive food (in any cuisine) that SF has to offer. The ambiance is outstanding with deep red walls, cat butler candle holders, old Venetian curiosities on the wall, and Flora and her helpers creating an almost familial setting. The fresh homemade focaccia as well as the gnocchi appetizer are without question the best in the city. All the more amazing given their location in a North Beach full of cookie-cutter pasta joints, their unique menu changes frequently, and the unspoken rule from regulars is that you should reserve an early seating since popular dishes often run out by 8:30.
