Continually singled out as one of San Francisco's best neighborhood restaurants, Chenery Park Restaurant, an off-the-beaten-path find, has led locals to beat new paths straight into the charming neighborhood of Glen Park. The menu is a familiar but contemporary take on comfort food, some of which comes with an added dash of Southern flair. Weekly specials include brisket, meatloaf and fried chicken. There is a full bar, an impressive wine list and a carefully chosen selection of draft beers. See the website for a full menu, weekly specials, kids night details and more.
Chenery Park is one of my favorites. It is in the neighborhood where my grandson, nine, lives with my daughter and her husband. The food is good, solid American with a California fresh twist, the service is thoughtful. The last time I mistakenly ordered mussels, thinking I had ordered scallops. I didn t like mussels. The waitress was polite but did not budge and I relented. They were the best mussels I had ever had and now I like mussels! Raiden, my grandson, as always, ordered the Mac n Cheese. I m OK with that as long as he has some of my side order of Spinach!
I wish I could say I had a better meal here. The restaurant itself is very cute, and the staff was very nice and sincere. But I just really didn't enjoy my meal. Caveat: I'm a vegetarian.
The bread they brought to the table was not very good. My salad was fine (lettuce with persimmons and pomegranate seeds) but no better than something I would make at home. They had no vegetarian main dishes on the menu. They put together a pasta with the vegetables that were in all the other courses and it actually tasted worse than something I would eat at home. For dessert I had a root beer float - simple and enjoyable.
There were 5 other people eating with me (all meat eaters). They all enjoyed their meals more than I did (especially the jambalaya and the pork chops), but no one was raving.
So in summary, it was fine but not great. For similar prices and location, I would pick Blue Plate any day. They also don't cater to vegetarians, but there is always one vegi main course and the appetizers are amazing.
Who would think that you can find such quality food in this little neighbourhood? Chenery Park is by far the most upscale place around, with excellent French-Californian cuisine, an extensive wine-list, and very knowledgable staff. This is a great place for a special night out, or just for an excellent glas of wine at the bar.
Chenery Park is worth the trek to Glen Park. A lovely neighborhood spot nestled in the center of groovy Chenery Street, the food is great and the service is warm and welcoming. I had the halibut and J had the gumbo-- both were absolutely delicious.
Looking forward to going back for a Tuesday Kids' Night!
We go there Tuesday with our 6 year old daughter... with a place full of kids, it can get crazy and loud, but we get a great meal and a glass of wine at the same time. The food is great and it is a really nice place. They have a special menu for the kids on Tuesday.
