You know, there is something to be said for basic Mexican food and a restaurant where you can sit down and have chips and salsa from a bowl at your own table. I have no problem with the burrito bars, etc. around the city but sometimes you just want to sit and order from a menu. I made the serious mistake of going to Chevys when I first moved here in my search and couldn't even gag that junk down. This place I really like... simple and good.
The only downside to Puerto Alegre are the crowds of people waiting to go in! I now try to go at lunch, or early in the evening because the word is out and everyone is there, every night of the week. amazing margaritas, and the best shrimp tacos anywhere!
This place is great but it is crowded most times. Prepare to wait a little while, Blondie's next door is a great place to have a drink while you wait. The constant mariachi bands asking for money isn't so wonderful but everything is made up for once you are in and have a tasty margarita and delicious dinner.
Although it's been a challenge to find GOOD Mexican food in San Francisco, Puerto Alegre comes really close. They have great salsa and excellent shrimp dishes. Be sure to ask for Corzo tequila. It's the best I've EVER tried, and not any other bar that I've been to has it. It's always busy so be sure to go with plenty of time to spare. You might have to wait a while for a table.
Puerto Alegre is the quintessential Mission restaurant. Margaritas are strong and delicious, food is always fresh and amazing, and the value can't be beat! Mariachis roaming around the restaurant add to the festive ambiance.
