Henry's Hunan Restaurant, San Francisco

Good food for the lunchtime crowd. Some dishes are a little spicey and some are a little bland.

good food...if you're in a hurry

Once I stepped into the restuarant, I was greeted by the hostess, which brought me to my seat. Seconds later, the waitress broght me a pitcher of water and some tea. That is great service! When I was ready to order, the waitress was there in seconds! About 7 minutes later, I recieved my food. It looked so good and it was delicious. The bill was cheap and I generously put my tip on the table. This is truly the best restuarant I ever dined at!

I used to work near Hunan on Sansome and would go there almost weekly; this was about a year ago. I show up recently and the hostess actually remembered me for what I used to order - spicy chicken and green beans. Everytime I'm in the City, I stop by...it's the best.

Jeff the owner seems to live at this place. Our office is nearby so we're there at least once a week. I've never had anything I've not liked and this man is the epitome of a welcoming owner. Ask for the dumplings that the staff eats and compare them with the standard. The rock cod, Henry & Marty's specials and the orange chicken are my favorites. I also can't imagine a better hot sour soup that they include with their lunch menu. This is a tough town to compete in but we consistently return to this wonderful neighborhood spot.

And I still love it! An absolute MUST. Far better and less obnoxious than the over-rated Nan King. Try the Onion Cakes, Steamed Dumplings, Smoked Ham, Marty's Special and the Noodles with Pork Sauce. Amazing!

I have been eating from this restaurant for 20 years. Throughout those years have noticed that some entrees are better than others based on the chef for the night. Today we ordered take-out, which we do on occasion, and the two containers we ordered were only half full. A first time experience. When I phoned the restaurant, I was told too bad and by the way, we were mischarged for our meal and we actually owe them an additional sum of $12.80. No apology for the lack of food for our order nor any explanation for our order being only half fulfilled. When I asked to speak with the owner I was told they were in China and would not be back for months. I guess, my warning for anyone is, if you do take out, check the container. For those dining in, some days are better than others for the cuisine.

Every other day, the same group of folks I work with come back to the office, reeking of garlic and spices and goodness knows what else, full and happy and talking about nothing else other than the food they just had. I've heard about Henry's Hunan from many a coworker but I had yet to partake. It had been lauded by everyone as the best chinese food in the city, a pretty lofty title. After lunching there yesterday, I am inclined to agree. EVERY dish we ordered was beyond delicious. Savory to the last bite...and there was little left to eat when we were done...perhaps maybe an onion or two- but that's it. I highly recommend this popular lunch spot. Just remember to get there before or after the lunch rush or you will have a wait.

The food was great! The waitors/waitresses are very helpful. The food came very quickly after I ordered. Great Service! This restuarant deserves an A+!
