Magnolia Pub & Brewery

Description

It is Haight-Ashbury, so what better music to be wafting in the air as you sip the house-made brews than the Grateful Dead in a place that was known back in the '60s as the Drug Store? Remodeling has made the setting less psychedelic, though there is an ebullient mural on the wall, but Jerry and the guys are always on the sound system taking you back to the Summer of Love. That sets a mellow mood for the huge sandwiches, plates of sausages, bowls of hearty soup, and tempting finger foods such as french fries and onion rings. The service from the hip and hippie wait staff is friendly and the atmosphere is always 1967.

Magnolia may give the initial impression of being hang-out for locals. It is soooo much more. Servers are attentive and friendly. Owner/manager(s) are ecologically conscious. Stacks of clean, dry washcloths to use for hand drying are by the sinks in place of paper towels. The food is delicious, with locally grown, and often organic ingredients. There are many marvelous hand crafted beers to choose from. Among the very special and unusual is the Weekapaug Gruit. Brewed as beers of old. In place of hops is a wonderful combination of herbs. This seems particularly pleasing to the wine drinking crowd. And conversation flows easily among the folk at the large bar table and regular bar. The crowd is very reflective of San Francisco's diversity. ENJOY!

Great place for lunch. Never been here for dinner, but the rest of the area was dead for a late Sunday lunch and Magnolia was absolutely packed. Limited menu - yes - but the sandwiches we had were awesome. My wife and I tried a taste of all of the beers on tap that day. Liked all of them and really liked the Pale Ale which made the 30 minute wait for a table no problem at all. Do not often make it to SF, but will definitely come back for lunch when we do...

good burger, especially with cheddar cheese on it!!! Fries are good too, and i got some pale ale which went so well with the burger. i usually go for lunch to beat the crowds, they dont take reservations so can be crowded at night time...

Yummy Locally Brewed Malty Beverages = Go!
By Eric, 5/19/07
Except that the lack of reservations and the popularity of this place means you have to wait in a crowded room for a bit before you can enjoy your meal. I would also note that the menu selection is somewhat limited (but if there is a mushroom dish, you should get it). That all being said, it is a brewery, so have a beer while you wait for your table. That's what you're there for anyway--right?

Great beer
By Richard, 3/10/06
This is one of the best brewpubs anywhere. Try the cask-conditioned ales - they usually have at least one on tap. Food is very good, tho some dishes are a bit pricey.

Nice place to eat, drink and watch some on the remnants of the 70's. Very good tasting beer, ans food was quite good.

This is a tasty burger
By zep, 9/24/05
Crowded and noisy on a Friday night, but my burger was tasty and the brown ale washed it down just fine.
