Luna Park - San Francisco
Luna Park with its casually hip decor, lively bar scene, and delicious moderately-priced cuisine is a Valencia Street sensation, loved by San Franciscans and visitors alike. The menu, mostly French and Italian with a few American and Asian accents, is simple without sacrificing excitement, highlighting flavorful ingredients and presenting food in a way that is comforting and nourishing to the soul.
Good, though not mindblowing California fusiony food. My goat cheese fondue was awesome (notr a lot you can do wrong here, the Cobb salad was somewhat bleh and soggy. They had Pilsner beer, always a plus. The staff was of select politeness and swiftness. Mixed Mission patrons, from the student via the hightech worker to the well-off NPR burgeois. Dark place, yet still cozy.
I've been to Luna Park twice so far and both times my meals were flawless and so was someone elses. The Staff: hmmm...attentive and on top of the game first time around. Second time mediocre and delivery of an incorrect order - still a delicious plate, but not mine, good recovery though. The restaurant: a little loud, and a bit dark & gothic in atmosphere, I expected a brood of Vampires to enter at any moment, but still I love this place and hail the chef. A definite recommend for visitors and locals.
luna park serves yummy, honest, frenchy/american food for a reasonable price. the macaroni and cheese is ultra-rich and decadent. the fish is quite nice, and i really like the moules frites (they're a starter, but large enough to make a meal of). the highlight of luna park is the fun, playful cocktails and desserts. one of the cocktails lets you make your own dr. pepper, with a tiny glass bottle of actual dr. pepper, vanilla vodka, dr. pepper jelly bellies, and other assorted goodies to mix your own concoction up. their famous smores are totally delicious: homemade marshmallow and melted chocolate in tiny little ramekins, perfect for spreading on graham crackers.
Fab food for four...Goat cheese fondue served w/tart apples and croutons.yum!
The roasted artichoke w/aoili is right from Rome. The lemon green beans w/shallots and evoo...tops. Mushroom ravioli are soft pillows of dough w/fragrant shrooms and a lite butter sauce. The desserts are fab...choco fondue w/ mallow creme and home made grahams...Great place REASONABLE and funky...great cocktails too!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco.
Great food, relaxed atmosphere. Nothing pretentious.
It feels like a neighborhood restaurant .. but it delivers first-class California cuisine.
I suggest the Warm Goat Cheese Fondue with Grilled Bread and Sliced Apples.
For the entre - I ordered the Rigatoni with Spicy Sausage Ragout and Pecorino Cheese. Although it's more of a winter meal .. this is San Francisco, afterall. My date had the Lemon risotto.
First the good-- the atmosphere is ultra-cool without being stuffy, the food was outstanding, and the waiter was great. So why wasn't it perfect/5-star? One of the rudest hostesses I have ever experienced-- we had 7P reservations on a Fri night and when I realized due to 101 traffic, we would be a bit late, I called to notify them. The hostess said they would hold the table for 15 min 'without penalty' and we got there at 7:10, but our friend had to find a place to park, no easy job in the Mission on a Fri night. Despite the fact that we had called in advance and there were two open tables right in front of us while we waited, the hostess refused to seat us until all 4 were present and then sat us around a small table meant for two and literally said we needed to be 'penalized' becuase we were late. I was so aggravated, its a tribute to the waiter and the restaraunt that I ended up having a positive experience. If you go, make sure you're on time, and don't miss the mojitos and mac and cheese with broccoli and ham!
