Description

It's decidedly not cozy inside this restaurant. While the stark white walls are covered with pictures of the San Francisco skyline, the overall feeling is one of understatement. Taste the grilled flatbread topped with Portabella mushrooms, radishes and spinach and you'll be shocked that a small and nondescript restaurant could produce such a delectable dish. Other items include a variety of sandwiches, salads, grilled meats and vegetables. All are cooked and /or served with a twist, such as a side of sauteed baby peppers or mixed with Gorgonzola. The Nouvelle American Cusine is a pleasant departure from the traditional taquerias and Asian restaurants in the area.

Sunday Noon (Mother's Day) we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table but it was definitely worth it! I loved the fact that the coffees are self-served while you wait. We also like the fact that they use organic produces and the freshness of their dishes reflect that. Toasted Banana bread and potato with herb are must-have sides. Service was friendly, and non-intrusive. Bill came out to be about $20 per person, which is very reasonable for the quality.

at 10am today (on saturday) their waitstaff was already underwater, and it was before the really big crowd had even arrived. despite some bobbles (long wait for food and for check) the food was delicious. we had the fruit plate (for the baby), cruellers, soft scramble and salmon hash with poached eggs. it's good to see they're using local king salmon, which is still in season this time of year. overall, Universal is back in heavy rotation for brunch for us, at least on the early side before the crowd descends on it.

This place consistently has one of the most interesting and satisfying brunches in town. Anywhere from sweet to savory, you will not be disappoint. The only negative is the relatively long wait, but if you come at the right time before the 11AM rush or after 1PMish you're in good shape. Ask for Adam - he's the best wait staff there!

Great Mission Venue
By ,
A little off the beaten path of Mission eateries, the Universal Cafe has an outstanding menu, a tasty wine list, and a very friendly staff. Reservations are a must, unless you are willing to eat at the counter, but either way, you won't be disappointed. Outstanding food and very local atmosphere make this place a winner!

The art of brunch
By ,
Great place for brunch. A little pricey but worth it. Eggs are good, gristles fantastic and the turkey burger and tuna salad also looked great.

one of our favorite restaurants

the menu is always limited, fresh and interesting. Service is always good. Good beverage options for drinker and non-drinker. We always leave happy when we go to universal. Mostly go for dinner, but brunch is tasty too! Never had a bad experience in any way at universal.

Expensive, but worth it

We are always greeted at the door with a smile and a drink waiting as we have become regulars. I look forward to the creatively prepared food and relaxed, clean atmosphere.
