Burma Super Star Restaurant

Description

Burma Superstar is one of the few restaurants in the city to specialize in Burmese cuisine. Critically acclaimed, this venue was voted "Best Burmese restaurant on the West Coast" by Asian magazine and has been featured on the Food Network. Treat yourself to large portions of flavorful ethnic food at prices that will not hurt your wallet. Burmese cuisine is full of spicy flavors such as lemon grass, garlic and curry. There are more than 75 dishes on the menu including Mandarin recipes and a wide selection of meat-free dishes for vegetarians. Decide between noodles and rice, fresh vegetables, poultry, beef, pork, lamb and seafood. This place is highly popular and does not take reservations, so there's frequently a crowd waiting outside the door during peak hours. Insider tip: call ahead to put your name on the waiting list.

Excellent Food

What can I say, look at the crowd of people drooling by the door when you walk up...

When a restaurant has a line out the door from the minute they open to past 8 pm on a random Wednesday night, you can bet you'll get a lot of bang for your buck. The masses don't lie. Your money is well spent here, so long as you have good company to entertain you while you wait. Maybe bring some crackers to tide you over if you get low blood-sugar...

After waiting almost two hours I was expecting something special...The ambiance was noisy, crowded and dark. The food was good but did not warrant a return visit even if the surrounding were more comfortable. Perhaps I did not order the right thing, The tea salad was interesting, but not intriguing. I regarded the food as more oily and seasoning lack the dimension and nuances of a good Thai or Vietnamese restaurant.

Flavorful Food!
By Jennifer, 4/14/06
We waited 2hrs for a party of 4 on Sat night. Didn't get seated till 10pm but it was worth the wait. Try the samosa soup...it's filled w/ bits of samosa..yum! Tea leaf salad was refreshing w/ just lemon juice as dressing. The waiters are extremely polite. Unfortunately, no reservations allowed but you can call in and have your name/cell# placed on the list. Grab drinks at a nearby bar and they'll call you when it's your turn.

As a recent newbie to Burmese food and to this restaurant, I must say that my experience so far has been fantastic. From what I have tasted so far Burmese food seems to be a mix of Indian, Chinese and Thai cuisines, which I really love. Of the items on the menu that I have tried so far, my FAVS are the samusas, coconut rice, the platha, samusa soup, sesame beef and the rainbow and tea leaf salads. The staff is super friendly and very eager to suggest stuff to newbies such as myself. If you aren't too keen about super spicy foods, I would definitely recommend telling your waitperson to drop the spiciness level down a notch. The only “con” is the wait. They don’t take reservations, and if you don’t come early, you will probably have to wait 30-45 minutes for table depending on the size of your group. The good news is that you can give them your cell number and they will call you once your table is ready and you can go have a drink at a nearby watering hole.

My wife heard of this place on that show 'Check Please' and I was a bit skeptical. Burmese? Whatever ... she usually knows that she's talking about. The food was AWESOME. We had a few traditional burmese dishes, and a few dishes that seemed closer to traditional thai cuisine. The food was very fresh, and although the small place gets crowded, the service was decent. We'll definitely go back.

This is easily one of my favorite places to eat. The food is soo fresh and delicious. Some of the plates are made with over 10 ingredients, all of which you see before they mix it up. I go there as often as I can. Thanks!

Great food!

Burmese food is one of my favorites, and this restaurant does not disappoint. The 'sambusa soup' and the rainbow salad are perennial pleasers. There are a few veggie options, but it is not a vegetarian restaurant. It is a small place, and quite packed. But the service is fast and efficient. The wait can be long; but there's a number you can call to get added to the waiting list. I drove up from the Peninsula, and called them before heading out; the timing was perfect: I had to wait only 10 minutes. There are plenty of bars and coffee shops (and the great Green Apple bookstore) nearby, so you can always hang out over there while you wait.
