A Star in SOMA
My husband & I own our home in the SOMA district. We are always going to the same digs for dinner. The other day before entering the 280 on-ramp, I saw that the Flower Market Cafe had some new signs on their building. They were advertising FREE parking for dinner from 5-10pm and happy hours from 4:30 to 6:30pm. We went there last night for dinner. Parking in the lot in front of the restaurant was FREE and plenty of parking. They greeted us at the doors with friendly smiles. There were candle lite tables, table cloths and napkins. It seemed a bit intimidating as I felt like I should have been dressed better than casual. (I just got back from shopping, wearing flip flops and my nicer sweatsuit.....But, it didn't matter. There's a bar in the back of the restaurant filled with people drinking, chatting and watching some sports event on the television. The service was great! The wait staff was accommodating too. The chef came by (Salvador) to intro himself. He's been a chef in the North Beach area for over 30 years. My husband & I ordered the Filet ($23.) which was served with vegs and potatoes (I had mashed). I ordered a small bowl of the Clam chowder, good flavor. The Filets were cooked just and overall plating was enough, not too filling & not too little.
We even had a lite sorbet afterwards. The lighting was enough and could be romantic. They have an outside seating area (all enclosed) maybe by a canope? After dinner mints were offered. Overall, we were pleased with the service, meal and environment! We're going back with our teenagers (3). We decided it's a place to go at least once a month. And it's close to home! Be prepared to spend at least $25. per person on the average for dinner. (the Prime rib is available only on Sat. & Sun.) (we're going to try their brunch soon.) Bon appetite!
