Sam Wo Restaurant

Description

Sam Wo has been in business for over one hundred years in San Franciscoac2s Chinatown. This tiny three story restaurant has been serving Chinese comfort food to a diverse community of both locals and travelers alike. During the 1950s, it was home to late night beat poets like Jack Kerouac. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Edsel Ford Fung (aka the worldac2s rudest waiter) taunted tourists and regulars, giving Herb Caen plenty of good material for his column. Today, this family-run business still makes its rice noodles fresh daily and offers it to our customers at reasonable price.

Holly Cow! I used to take the trolly car there for $40 cents and have a plate of food for less than $3. I went there, maybe twice while in college at S.F.S.U. in the mid-seventies. I never knew it was famous at the time. 106 years! Yikes. What a shame. Blame communist S.F. and it s central planners. I m not surprised, just saddened.

Sam Wo is a must see on any trip to The City. Dirt cheap, delicious, hearty portions are just a few of the reasons to visit. Sam Wo was also a favorite of poets Allen Ginsberg and Michael McClure.

An Experience in SF
By ,
Sam Wo's is for me a favorite place for a few very special dishes The must for me is an order of the Roast Pork Rice Noodle Rolls with Asian hot mustard . What makes this different is that you need to walk through the Kitchen so that you can climb the stairs to the upper floor dinning areas. Things I stay away from are the Chicken. But for the soups , noodle roll and a few interesting dishes its a great experience. Just go in with the understanding that this is not going to be like any dinning experience you might be used to in the US . Its more like eating in the crowded upstairs hallway of a small crowded apartment.

By ,
family members went there 35 years ago and the food, service and decor is still the same. Its GREAT. The wait staff is very friendly, funny and the first to suggest whats good. I love it and we go there at least twice a month when we come into the city. I recommend it highly.
