Miller's East Coast West Delicatessen is an authentic Jewish deli located on Polk street at the foot of the nob hill. The deli is decorated with beautiful art displays. While there, apart from the bagels you could order a sandwich, or kasha varnishkes and a Dr. Brown's soda. The popularity can be judged by the throng who battle wind and rain to eat out here. This place must have changed since the early reviews posted here. I frequent the place for lunch on weekends and it is always packed. Reubens are my favorites with the ingredients always warm and delicous. And the waitstaff couldn t be friendlier. I ve never been disappointed here, nor do I know of anyone who doesn t love the place - unless they are on a diet.
I remember when this business opened and while I was no longer living in the city, at the time, I made a point of making this deli one of my first destinations after I checked into my hotel. Their menu was New Haven, Jewish Deli familiar. The preparation and service was not. Since I know the owner and also his previous partner who opened the business I thought the service side of their business wouldn't include a large exhibition of burned out, been there, done that San Francisco wait staff mentallity. The attitude and poor service; save that for West L.A. and the Southland.
The food is actually not bad, not really authentic New York taste, but very close indeed. The only authentic New York quality is the bad attitudes from 2 or 3 of the staff members. Stiil enjoy, and wash it all down with cocktails from The Cinch Saloon next door.
Was in SF for a giants game. Looking for some good deli and heard about ECWD. Have to say it was great.Beats David's deli in price and quality.This jewish kid loved the NY style. It is now my must have when I am in the city.
Definitely a lot of hype, but it was good. Been twice in the past week. First time the sandwich was a bit bland, but the crab cake sandwich I had last time was spot on. Takes a while to actually get your food, but seems worth it most of the time.
the reubens here are the best in SF. the pastrami is salty and delicious, the kraut is tangy and good, and the sauce is perfect.
i did have another sandwhich there - a hot roast beef something - that i didnt like that much. it just tasted off.
ambiance is casual/old-school.
Recently, my husband and I stopped by Eastcoast West for lunch. We settled on Matzo Brie, a potato knish, and an order of 'homemade' (as it states on the menu) cheese blintzes. Minutes after we ordered a busboy walked right by me holding two boxes of frozen cheese blintzes. I saw him carry the box back to the kitchen remove the blintzes from the box. 15 minutes later, our waitress brought us a plate with two tiny blintzes on it. For five bucks! For $5, I could have bought my own box and ate the whole thing. I have nothing against frozen cheese blintzes...I've bought them from time to time. But don't try to pass them off as homemade. I know the difference, and I bet most of the 'homesick-for-east-coast-jewish-deli-food' customers know the difference as well. The knish was just okay, but at this point, we were skeptical about everything. The Matzo Brie was very good, but I'll be forever scarred by the 'blintzes-from-the-box-even-though-the-menu-says-they're-homemade' incident.
