Mel's Drive-In

Description

Mel's Drive-in on Van Ness is the sister restaurant to Mel's on Lombard Street and is often filled to bursting with tourists due to its location. However, that does not make it any less fun. When you finally secure a table, order a frosty milkshake and peruse the menu for the most outrageously calorie-packed item you can find. From meat loaf plates to enormous hamburgers to truly soothing Chicken Noodle Soup, the menu has it all. It is the perfect place to take younger siblings or rowdy friends or a date.

The place was only half full, and they wanted to seat us at a wobbly table for 2 near the door. Wait staff was confused and not very interested in making customers happy. The food was OK enough to fill your belly, but that's about it. Only go for the neon.

I ate there sober once. I wasn't sure the meat in my hamburger was actually once a cow. Sure didn't taste like it. Of all the restaurants in SF this has to be in the bottom 1%. Oh yeah, and its WAY overpriced.

All I know is Mel's on Lombard has the best frickin turkey burgars on the planet-they beat out Fatburgar in Vegas. I haven't been to the Van Nees location so I can't judge that one. Lombard's local is always packed and worth the wait. I live on the Central Coast but every time we hit San Francisco, you can bet we have a bag of Mel's turkey burgars to take home. I sooo wish they would build one here.

Not sure how good the food actually is. This is the spot a designated driver drives you to after a night of drinking. I do not think I have ever been to this Mel's prior to 2am ever. It is always packed, the shakes are good..... that I do know...... it is a great spot to hit late night.... after a night on the town.

Can't ever forget a single visit
By R., 9/2/07
It's weird...but I remember each and every visit to Mel's - whether on Van Ness or in the Marina. I now live in New York (Manhattan) and I still wish that there was a Mel's Diner here. Maybe I remember every visit because of the jukebox at every table or the different variety of food or maybe it was because each visit just happened to be so real that only a memory would keep it and follow-

A Classic in the Heart of the City
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/10/07
This place is fantastic, great for locals and world travelers looking for an authentic American classic. The food comes fast, the help is always helping and the ambiance is perfect. Sit down, watch as the city pulses past you, listen to the oldies jukebox and enjoy a hearty very affordable meal. The menu is veried and has many healthy choices. The bathrooms are spotless and well stocked. Your average stay at this classic dive will range from 30 to 45 min, good timing given the parking situation.
