Zuni Cafe

Description

This James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco opened in 1979. A vibrant Parisian-style standing-only copper bar greets you as you enter on Rose Alley. Zuni's menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner. Even without a reservation, bar tables are available on a first come, first served basis and the full menu is available. The bar also serves traditional cocktails made with top-shelf ingredients; refreshments at its best in an environment of effortless hospitality. Whether you dine early or prefer to dine after theater, Zuni is a welcoming haven. -Judy Rodgers, chef/co-owner -Gilbert Pilgram, co-owner

Guide books and sap tourists are the only thing keeping this place in business. A friend dragged me back recently, despite my protestations, and I can definitely attest that Zuni has slipped even further into mediocrity. The food is bland, servings are tiny and sloppily plated. The wines are excellent (and expensive), but served in cheapo stemware. Service is lackadaisical. I can get decent oysters anywhere, thanks. I want my money back!

I was seated at our table for four even though my three companions weren't with me. Very attentive service. Hadn't been to Zuni's in twenty plus years and wanted the hamburger that I remembered from so long ago. It didn't disappoint. The best burger around and the best Caesar.

Lousy -- there is no other word to describe the food but lousy. Three dishes were simply tasteless. Some claims with garbanzo beans, overcooked halibut and a chocolate cake that tasted like it came straight from an easy bake oven. The burger was kind of OK but not great. The legendary chicken is long on anticipation but short on taste. It is just lousy food. Maybe have a drink at the bar and people watch but don't eat. Wine list is poor too.

The Zuni Cafe Cookbook has been my gourmet reference for years now, so when visiting San Francisco I was compelled to stop at the cafe for a meal. Seated under a beam which my companion's head came to know intimately we ordered the frisee salad, the rabbit, and the grouper. The salad was perfectly dressed, but perfectly boring; the rabbit was salty beyond reason; and the grouper lacked both flavor and texture. I couldn't be more disappointed.

A decent mix of people and food. Oysters have been a favorite here forever!

Good food but the staff is somewhere else. The staff is more concerned with their own lives than the customers and it damages what would otherwise be a good restaurant. Judy needs to clean the front of the house and start over, else she will never be a great restaurant. Give this one a pass.

Zuni has been my favorite restaurant since I moved to San Francisco when I was 18. I have spent many an afternoon imbibing a little hair of the dog disguised as miss bloody mary. Now that I'm more, ahem, refined (and now that I can afford to pay for dinner...to hell with youth!), I find that there is Zuni and there is everyone else. Impeccable from the oysters to the roasted chicken.
