Description

Tu Lan diner does not have any notable decor. Tables, chairs and a long counter fill the room, all of them packed with locals, ex-pat Vietnamese, upscale business types, and students who love the food here. Toothsome shrimp dumplings wrapped around stalks of crispy-sweet sugar cane, Pho soup that is rich and nourishing with bits of beef or pork swimming in long-simmered broth, and lemon beef over rice that is bracing and hearty are just a few of the delicious dishes served up here. The wait staff is quick, but much too busy for service that is more than efficient.

Tu Lan is nothing more than dog entrails marinating in sewage water. I have eaten at this restaurant three times in the past ten years because I work a block away from it. Upon each dining, I have walked out hating myself for being so desperately hungry as to stoop so low as to eat at Tu Lan. The rice dishes I have ordered came marinating in two inches of cooking oil. I went with a friend once, who ordered a noodle soup, and the noodles were all stuck together, meaning that the noodles weren't properly cooked. We were looking around us and we noticed that the diners were all filthy laborers and folks who most likely grew up eating greasy trailer park food. Not a single person was Asian. That ought to be a sign of the kind of food Tu Lan truly has. As for Julia Child's review, the woman specialized in French cuisine. What would she had known? She wasn't even Asian.

Food is tasty and well-prepared.Now the bad news.... The clientele is a mix of the good, the bad, the ugly and the VERY ugly. And it's small--lots of togetherness, whether you want it or not. If I cannot eat at the counter, I eat in my car or on the street. An experience to remember. A good place to eat before you go to the Golden Gate Theatre or to anything else in the 6th & Market area.

Concentrate on the great food and maybe you can ignore the atrocious surroundings.

The best shrimp fried rice on the planet. Is it saffron that takes the taste to heaven and casts a wonderful yellow glow on the rice? The fast-paced kitchen and assorted clientele lining up at the door for take-out add to the unique and wonderful experience.
