New Delhi Restaurant

Description

Named one of the finest Indian Restaurants in the US by New York Times and featured on the Galloping Gourmet TV Show, New Delhi is the place to dine. Decorated like a Maharajah's private banquet room, the restaurant serves cuisine made from recipes culled from the royal Indian menus dating back 300 to 400 years using the freshest local ingredients. Chef and owner, Ranjan Dey, star of PBS show - "MY INDIA" creates daily specials with his six gourmet spice blends, available nation wide in gourmet specialties. New Delhi Bar has been the favorite hot spot for many, working in the downtown, restaurant and hotel industry, since its inception in 1988. It is famous for its "Double-Happiness-Happy Hour" featuring nightly drink specials. The first from 5:30 to 6:30pm and the second from 10 to 11pm - because not everybody works 9 to 5!

Not worth it
By g, 9/1/05
The restaurant is too expensive and they do not offer any thing worth the money you pay. For example, they charge 4$ for litterally two scoops of rice....Yeah, just rice... that you have to pay for separate (not included with your entree). The atmosphere: one of the waitresses was having a fight with another. The restaurant was otherwise empty. I can see why now. Overall bad experience. I recommend that you go two block further down to find a much better Indian food restaurant.

Bad experience- won't go back
By Monisha, 10/8/06
Had heard good things about the restaurant. Called at 12:15pm asking them if I need to get a reservation to come in for lunch. Was told.no walk in's fine.we reached at about 1:40pm driving an hour from east bay. We were told, sorry no more lunch since we are preparing for 3 parties for the evening! Very unprofessional not to let us know when we called ahead too! Waste of our time to drive all the way from East bay to eat in this restaurant.

Good ambience, yucky food
By Srinath, 9/1/06
Very limited selection of vegetarian food. Quality was bad. Onion kulcha was undercooked. Mango lassi was more like mango water. May be good for people who like non-veggie food. Ambience is good but not good enough to be a replacement for food ! Avoid.

Don't bother
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/14/05
Ate at New Delhi recently on a business dinner 01/12/04. The food was awfull and the service appalling. There was nothing positive I could find about this resturant. Hopefully, people can save their time, money, and a negative experience of Indian food. Go a few blocks down the road into the Tederloin and you find great Indian food -- Chuntney, Shalimar, Pakwan, & Nan & Curry to name a few.

Don't Bother
By YV, 7/25/06
We recently decided to go to this restaurant.... Sadly when we got there we noticed a whole bunch of men standing outside the restaurant smoking... it made the place look very creepy and shady... when we got the the door we noticed a hand written sign saying the restaurant was closed for a private party... so a wasted trip... It would be nice if the restaurant being closed was posted on the web site.

After hearing about New Delhi from a work friend, my wife and I decided to put this restaurant on our must try list .. and we are so glad that we did! We arrived at the restaurant without reservation - not the smartest thing to do on a VERY busy Friday night. However, our wait for seating turned out to be extremely pleasant since we got to hang out in the bar. After a reasonable wait, the hostess seated us at a quiet table towards the back of the dining room. First thing I notice is that the ambiance here is very elegant -- decor is spot on. The moment we sat down and browsed the menus, I had a good feeling about this restaurant. Their cocktail list is extensive and top-notch. We were able to choose the perfect drink to go with our appetizers. For entrees, we enlisted the help of our very nice waiter to sort through the menu options, and ended up ordering the samosa appetizer along with two main entrees. And for dessert, the mango ice cream. In one word, the food here is OUTSTANDING (!!) The mango prawn dish is one of the best entrees I ve ever had anywhere, and the naan here is so tasty that we ended up ordering some to go. Overall, this was a truly great dining experience, and we will definitely come back for more! Highly recommend to everyone.
