New Delhi Restaurant

Description

Named one of the finest Indian Restaurants in the US by New York Times and featured on the Galloping Gourmet TV Show, New Delhi is the place to dine. Decorated like a Maharajah's private banquet room, the restaurant serves cuisine made from recipes culled from the royal Indian menus dating back 300 to 400 years using the freshest local ingredients. Chef and owner, Ranjan Dey, star of PBS show - "MY INDIA" creates daily specials with his six gourmet spice blends, available nation wide in gourmet specialties. New Delhi Bar has been the favorite hot spot for many, working in the downtown, restaurant and hotel industry, since its inception in 1988. It is famous for its "Double-Happiness-Happy Hour" featuring nightly drink specials. The first from 5:30 to 6:30pm and the second from 10 to 11pm - because not everybody works 9 to 5!

My girlfriend and I stopped in here for a nice dinner a few nights ago. We didn't have reservations and the bar was kinda full, but we got sat quickly and had a waiter at our elbow shortly after. My sweetie is an Indian newbie and our server was great at answering questions and making suggestions. We went with a couple of them and were very happy with our meal. The rogan josh is great if you like spicy food, the chicken korma is great if you don't. We'll be back and this time we'll make a reservation. Edit: Tried the new Chef's Tasting Menu and wanted to give it two forks up. A great addition to an already fantastic place.

New Delhi Restaurant

The food here is always excellent and the spice level is perfect: just hot enough so you know you re eating Indian, but not so hot it s painful. They ve been in business for over 20 years and it s nice to see the owner greeting his long-time regulars. They don t have butter chicken on the menu, but the chicken tikka masala is very close and delicious all on it s own. I like to get that with rice and sag paneer, it s usually enough that I have some for lunch the next day. Great restaurant!

I love Indian and was looking forward to trying this place out with some friends. I was bummed to see that there was no butter chicken on the menu - doesn't everyone have that? The waiter suggested I try the tikka masala, he said it was like butter chicken, but with cream instead. It was awesome! Aside from that, they have all the Indian classics like sag paneer and nan bread. The food was really good and we'll definitely be back!

My 14 year old daughter wanted to try some Indian Food for her birthday. We gathered 3 generations of family ages 7 - 62 and went to New Delhi. We had a reservation and they were waiting on us. Called us by name when we arrived and we were seated immediately. We got served right away. The staff was very attentive and helpful as this was all our first time having Indian food. When you go ask for Ranjan he took GREAT care of us. He handled our table of 12 very well everything was perfect from the drinks, to the appetizers, to the main dishes. He made us all feel right at home and explained everything in great detail to us all even the kids. The decorum of the restaurant is festive. Thanks Ranjan & the New Delhi staff for making my daughter's 14th birthday celebration one she will never forget.

For some reason there are not many fine dining Indian places in the downtown area. This one has been around for a long time, and when you taste how well their food is seasoned you'll understand why. Most Indian places do buffet at lunch, but New Delhi has a their full menu for both meals. Great spot to take a client (free WiFi!). Not too shabby for downtown SF.

Great ice cream!: This is the perfect Indian restaurant, elegant, intimate and unpretentious. The chicken korma is served up in a rich sauce, mildly spiced with subtle hints of coconut milk and generously sprinkled with cashews. I felt like the dog 'Snuffles', who when given a bisciut, would float up into the air making happy, contented sounds, then slowly drift back down. The Tandoori platter was smoky and spicy, both dishes came with saffron rice and lots of crusty nan bread. The dessert was excellent as well, most Indian places either don't bother or over do the sweetness. We had some really great homemade mango ice cream and a scoop of chickoo ice cream. It was pink and tasted like a pear - a new one for me, but one I really want to have again. We happened to have parking karma, but if you don't, park at the garage around the corner and save yourself some headaches.

I dined at New Delhi this past week and I must say the experience exceeded my every expectation. Originally I had planned to only have cocktails in the bar (beautiful bar by the way), but then my guest and I decided to have dinner in the main dining room. I am so glad we did. the ambiance was impeccable. The soft lighting and elegant atmosphere made for a very romantic setting. My guest was very pleased. The food made this experience more memorable than ever. I had the Madras Tamarind Chicken and my guest had the Kashmiri Lamb Kofta, both of which were seasoned and cooked to perfection. I would recommend this restaurant to any one who is looking to dine somewhere new.

New Delhi Restaurant offers great service and food at reasonable prices. The owner, Ranjan, is friendly and offers lots of menu suggestions for first-timers. He and his staff were also very attentive, which we thought was a really nice touch. The food is wonderfully spicy and the Mixed Tandoori platter was delicious and the Lamb Korma was the best we had ever had. Dessert was a delicious mango ice cream. We'll definitely be back!

If you have ever grown up eating Indian food DON'T miss this place. Mostly Northern Indian with a page of Chef's Specials from around India.. The naan is made to order and delivered screaming hot to the table. Located a couple blocks from Union Square on the edge of the Tenderloin. This is the best Indian restaurant for it's price that I know of, and the dishes are not modified for an American taste!!!

We got take out from this restaurant and ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Mango Shrimp that was recommended by Sarah. We also ordered some bread recommended by the restaurant to go with this dish. They were friendly on the phone and pleasant at the time of pickup. The restaurant is extremely clean from what I can tell from my brief first impression. Everything looked orderly and well organized. They asked us what level of spice we wanted. I chose medium expecting the food to be mild in spice as so many restaurants tone down their spice for the American palate. I was happy to find the spice was indeed medium to my taste. So if too hot is too hot for you expect a true approach to heat level by this restaurant. Both dishes were very good. The chicken sauce was the better in flavor to my taste. The rice came out of the box loose and cooked perfectly. Nice job. We can't give this 5 stars as we have not eaten in house but for take out they did a terrific job and we will be going back.
