I go to Lefty O'Doul's every November on the Thanksgiving weekend, last year in 2008 I met a older Sir from England and Vicky from England as they were from two different parts that have bad history, boy did I get some history as we were having our drinks, the Bartender Patrick has always been Cool and makes a Great kettel Tonic, I get my postcard signed by my new friends each year, see you in November by the piano and the door Man from across the street
Lefty O'Doul's is a San Francisco institution with great ambience and old school atmosphere in a spacious hof brau style setting, with old style piano bar entertainment. San Francisco baseball legend Lefty left a plethora of old photos & memorabilia from his playing (in both the Majors & Minors) & managing days (RE: the Pacific Coast League Seals, where he managed the young Joe Dimaggio, as well as his years promoting the game in Japan). As for the food, the meat & spuds and salads & other sides are all inexpensive & filling. You can get a great hot dinner plate for around 10 bucks and a sumptuous sandwich for under 7. One of my favorite stops in the City.
I agree with a previous comment. The female barmaid was kinda rude..but once we gave a tip!! In fiarness there were 2 others working the bar and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Thet have a piano in the bay window area and they have a regular guy in to play. There are tv's all around the place with different sports on them all. Coming from the UK and liking Whiskey i asked the barman for a rusty nail..he got it!
We stayed close by in the Handlery for all 4 nights and ate breakfast in Lefty's every morning. The Handlery was great too. Breakfast at Lefty's was great and you didnt need to eat again until teatime. Lots of house specials on the menu and a wide choice of healthy options too. Starbucks coffee pretty much on tap with free top ups too. The young latino guys that work the tables were really helpful
This Bar and Restaurant is very inexpensive and the food is outstanding. There is wait service for breakfast and station service for lunch. Lots of baseball memorabilia. If you are on a budget, this is the place to eat. The staff is very friendly
I have been going to this restaurant since I was a kid. You get what you pay for, I personally recommend a nice lean pastrami on rye with some mashed potatoes & gravy or turkey leg dinner or even the polish sausage meal as well. By the way, stop by the bar get a brew and ask for Frank or Paul and tell 'em Big Greg sent you.
Lefty's has a lot more authentic character than most places in SF--it's got an East Coast tavern feel to it. There's a piano bar, a regular bar, TVs tuned to sports, mannish woody decor, real sports memorabilia on the walls and traditional American food served cafeteria style.
You get a big, meaty meal for less than you would pay anywhere near Union Square. There specialities are big sandwhiches and full hofbrau-style meals with hand-carved meat.
I found this resturant earlier this year while trying to find somewhere to eat during my lunch break. The price is great for all the food you get, the food is delicious, and the place is covered in old baseball pictures. How can you go wrong?!? It's set up cafeteria style, so you get your food as you order it. You get a main dish (spaghetti and meat balls, ribs, hand carved turkey,...), then a side salad (potato, macaroni, fruit,...), bread, and then (if you want) a drink for a total around $9. I have been there many times and I have never known the food to be bad or taste like dirty dish rags! Who ever said that must have had a cold and their taste buds weren't right or something. Lefty's is great! I don't live in the city so I haven't been there at night but it's also a piano bar. Again, I ask you...HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG? Fast, cheap and right by Union Square so it's easy to get to.

business person. Try the Steamed Clams and Mussels in Garlic, Herbs, and White Wine Sauce, or the Grilled Baseball ...
