Tao Tao is one of the better Chinese restaurant's in Sunnyvale, although the quality of their food can vary with the wind. The renovated the restaurant a few years ago, in an attempt to present more of a fine dining experience.
They have a nice bar. Try the Tao Tao Mai Tai (or two) before dinner. I love the Tao Tao Beef. They are known for their Chinese Chicken Salad, but I don't care for it. Their Hunan Shrimp and General's Chicken is also very good.
I have been going to Tao Tao's for years. In fact, it was in 1982 that I first visited Tao Tao's. In its early life, it was a rather dingy place where you entered thru the alley into a tiny waiting area always packed with people. For no reason I can think of, I kinda forgot about Tao Tao's for the last several years. Well, I recently had lunch with a friend who suggested Tao Tao's; great idea!
Well, they have completely remodeled the store and it looks GREAT! No longer entering thru the back alley, you enter into a bright, nice and clean large area on Murphy St.. The whole place has been replaced. The big question is what happened to the food?
Historically, they have had the best Wor Won Ton Soup in the Silicon Valley, and they still do! Let me say that again, their WWTS is still the best in the Valley! (OK, it is a bit smaller and a bit more expensive than in the 1980's, but, hey, get real) My friend had their Chinese Chicken Salad and it was also as good as I remembered it (yes, I took a taste).
Now firmly back on my list of places to eat, looking forward to going back.
Recently I took a group of out-of-town guests to this restaurant, and the group of 10 people all had a horrible time. Service was bad, slow, and worst of all the food was undercooked and bland. Also, the URL of the website is a spam site. Its not a real site.
Tao Tao Cafe has been around for many years - and that is always a good sign of a quality restaurant. An extensive remodel about 5 years ago gave the place an entire new look and it now has a great ambiance, as well as the great food that they have become famous for. The Chinese Chicken Salad is the best anywhere (a hint though if there are less than four of you dining, do not order the large size, unless that is all you plan on eating); also of note is the Tao Tao Beef (which has a very slight hint of maple), the Mongolian Beef (prepared with green and red peppers, not scallions, an great touch), and the Hot & Sour Soup (if you like it hot, this is the Hot & Sour for you; its among the hottest I've ever eaten - very good on a cold winter night). You certainly can't do much better than Tao Tao Cafe.
Hey, watch out when you order the chinese chicken salad (which is good)I told them I needed it for 10 people, they suggested 5 orders (75.00) CRAZY. Our guests only ate 3 cartons, and the rest went to waste (It gets soggy the next day, and doesn't save well). They over sold me. Each carton serves 4-5 not 2 like they said.
Total rip off...
Very disappointing food, and lackluster service and atmosphere.
Those looking for Chinese food in the area would be far better served by Mandarin Gourmet in Cupertino or Chef Chu's in Los Altos. (Or Tien Fu for modestly priced take-out.)
Or, just have a drink at the (nice) bar area in the front. Just avoid the food.
