My son and I ate at this Johnny Rocket today. We will not be going back. Food was mediocre, service was lacking, American Meal Deal wasn't. I ordered a patty melt (6.30) and went for the American Meal Deal - a salad and a soft drink for 3.50 add'l. My son ordered egg salad sand (5.00). The menu said you could substitute an original milk shake for the deal for $2.50. We asked the waitress if that was instead of the meal deal and she said yes. Or at least we thought she did. She was difficult to understand. The salad consisted of a very small bowl of torn iceberg lettuce (probably about 4 leafs) and some grated cheese. The 1000 Island dressing was nothing more than mayo mixed with catsup. The patty melt had a very thin hamburger patty that was smaller than the bread it was on. My son had ordered a chocolate milkshake. There couldn't have been very much chocolate in it since it looked like vanilla to me. Also it was watery. Maybe not quite half milk and the rest water. It was served in what was at most a 6 oz glass (not even filled to the top). There was add'l shake in the metal container but it was only about 1/2 a glass. The egg salad sandwich was hohum. My son can actually make better egg salad. When the check was brought we were charged full price for the milkshake (4.70). When I pointed that out and asked why when he had substituted the milkshake for the meal deal we were told that we hadn't read the menu correctly. It was 2.50 in addition to the deal and since my son had not ordered the deal, the milkshake was charged at full price. When the manger asked if everything was fine I told him no. The food was ok at best. He simply shrugged his shoulders. A better meal can be had for less money at a Carl's Jr or other fast food venue.
Oh yeah, and when the waitress brought our drinks she had us pass her the container of straws. She then lifted the top and we took our straws out. Don't know why we couldn't have opened the top ourselves. We were not given any nickels for juke box, the employees looked like they'd rather be somewhere else and the manager looked like he either hadn't gotten much sleep last night or he was stoned. All in all a real bad deal. I say stay away from this place.
Johnny's has an old-time diner appeal with chrome and vinyl everywhere, and oldies music piped through-out... The hot dogs and burgers are classics but they also have great shakes (Chocolates my fave), big fries, and killer grilled cheese sandwiches. The never ending soda fountain is as good as it gets and drinks are refilled promptly. All in all, Johnny Rockets is one of the best places for a leisurely lunch or contact meal with a business partner or friend that keeps you feeling good and upbeat.... Thanks Johnny! Rocket On!!!
