Everyone had been raving about these burritos so I decided to go and I was truly let down. I had such high expectations and NONE of them were met. The kitchen area was really dirty, none of the employees used gloves when handling any food. It was nice to pick what I wanted on my burrito - since I was able to pick it, I thought I would enjoy it, but I did NOT. The burrito tasted 'dirty' and it smelled REALLY bad. Whenever I went to take a bite there was an odor coming off of the burrito, a horrible stench. My sister and I went together and her burrito was the same and she was unhappy also. I'm not sure if I went on a 'bad day' but I definitely will not go back.
Intrigued by the rave reviews, I finally ventured in here. I was dismayed and disgusted. I like that they custom-build a burrito for you, but they put their bare hands in the foods bins - no gloves, no wax paper, no sanitation.
I would have forgiven that if the burrito had been delicious - but it was beyond mediocre, it was actually yucky. I had to force myself to finish as much as I did of it. It was bland. It was stale. It was nasty. 24 hours later my stomach is still achy and grumbling.
I was so shocked and disappointed. I can't believe so many people love this place - maybe I just caught it on an off day, but it was foul. I can never bring myself to eat there again.
If I could only eat at one place for the rest of my life this would be it!
The food is SO good! SO fresh! And for what you pay you get a ton! I had a burrito supreme once that must have weighed 2 lbs! Order anything, it's all fantastic! I've never had better mexican food anywhere for any price.
The atmosphere, well, it's a mom-pop type of store with tables set out where they could find space..kind of wierd, but kind of sweet too. Also, parking isn't that great, it can be tough to find a spot.
La Costena keeps serving great burritos year after year. I must say that there are many people who don't prefer La Costena burritos to burritos at other restaurants. I felt the same way at first, but then I realized that I was trained to like a poorer quality burrito. La Costena will raise your standard.
La Costena customizes your burrito to the way you like it and I recommend the garlic steak burrito. Note that if you want a proper sit down restaurant, then go down the street to Burrito Real which is owned by the same proprietor. There are some subtle differences, but the great taste is equally the same.
This place was recommended by a friend of a friend, but it was worth it! They have a great selection of burritos and other Mexican foods, and it was very moderately priced too. I will definitely go back if I'm in the area.
If you like burritos, you have to try la Costena at least once. The kitchen is in the back of the grocery store. There is a long assembly line where you'll specify exactly what you want (refried vs black beans, type of meat, etc). No matter how big the burrito is, it will be fit into a seeminlgly tiny paper bag. The grilled vegetable burrito is delicious. The atmosphere is not great, so take your order to go.
