Indian is one of my favorite cuisines and I have only ever had not so great Indian food once at the Ganges vegetarian Indian restaurant in SF. It's very difficult to go wrong w/ Indian food I find. Saffron isn't an better then any other Indian restaurant, but they do have a few unique menu items. My main issue was the lack of options. They had less options per category than any Indian restaurant I have ever been to and that's saying a hell of a lot! Normally I order 2-3 appetizers since Indian appetizers are so creative and fun and I struggled to find 2 I liked enough to order. The cheese pakora was great and reminiscent of chicken nuggets in flavor oddly. Ordered the cheddar Nan which I had never seen before. Nan w/ sharp cheddar melted between kind like sauceless nan pizza. They did give us a super yummy dipping sauce for it though w/ is the sauce they use for their butter chicken. The mango lassie's while very good were not where near as mangoey as others I have had. Tasted more like a mellow mango sherbet blended. I ordered the vegetable dumplings which were good though had nothing to do w/ dumplings. Came in a sauce reminiscent of Korma sauce. My girl ordered a rice shrimp dish which was like an Indian version of fried rice she said.
They have a buffet at all times it seems though I find the idea of buffets gross and food is never as warm as it should be so I couldn't give u an idea of what they had there. I always order off menu cuz there's more selection and the food is guaranteed to be hot.
Service was very good and atmosphere was average for an Indian restaurant. May call for delivery, but wouldn't dine there again just cuz of the lack of options.
Here's a great $15 dinner buffet that you must try. The food is consistently good, the service is solid, and the location is great if you're anywhere near Belmont, San Carlos, etc.
Plus, they deliver. Who ever heard of that. An Indian joint, that's good, that delivers.
Hit this place up - you won't be disappointed.
Saffron may change how you feel about Indian food. If you already like Indian food, you will love Saffron. Even if you think you don't like Indian food, you should give Saffron a try. I've taken many friends who fall into this latter category, and they all have become new lovers of Indian food. The buffet (Tuesdays and Sundays dinner, daily at lunch) is a good way to taste a variety of Saffron's menu offerings. I prefer to order off the menu, with some of my favorites being the Chicken Tikka Masala, Navrattan Korma, Palak Paneer, and Chicken Vindaloo (spicy, but not HOT spicy - flavorful spicy). And the naan is the best you will ever have! Service is equal to the wonderful food. Truly the best Indian restaurant around.
Saffron has refined indian food in a pleasing decor. Their service is good but can be obtrusive. While I agree that their dinner prices can be a tad high ($2-3 higher that other restaurants) Their best value is their buffet lunch for about $10 per person. All in all this is a great addition to the neighborhood.
I cant wait to try their sister restaurant Pizza and Pipes in Redwood City. I think its Indian and Pizza and serve a special Indian pizza
We've taken out from Saffron twice, and both times I was struck by the price. While the food is good, I'm not sure it justifies the price. Extra rice, for example is an additional $4-$5. It may be a better deal if you eat in rather than take out.
Located downtown, this restaurant offers up fine, reasonably priced meals in a crisp dining atmosphere for the downtown shopper or
business person. Try the Steamed Clams and Mussels in Garlic, Herbs, and White Wine Sauce, or the Grilled Baseball ...
