The best intimate restaurant to throw a party on the peninsula. We took over the restaurant for a birthday party and the owner Ali and his staff put together a fantastic evening. All the guests raved! If you are looking for intimate, authentic French bistro style ambiance, great wait staff, and great food, you can't beat Bistro Vida.
To top it off we hired a fantastic band, Phil-in-th-Blanks to round out a perfect evening!
the food here was substandard. my friend and i ordered the steak with fries--the meat wasn't even seasoned and it was tough. the fries were decent, but again, not seasoned. another friend ordered a fish entree--bland and boring. She couldn't even finish it. we had an outside table and it was hard to catch our server's attention. she never came over to check on us--only was available when we had to find her.
The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice and cozy - a little bit Disneyland meets Paris.. but I can forgive them that. Keith McNally gets away with it because his food is INCREDIBLE. That isn't the case here. The salad plates were straight from the refrigerator - imagine taking your trader joe's spinach from a bag, slicing an apple that you had laying around for a few weeks, throwing a bunch of salt all over it, and then putting the entire plate in the fridge for a couple of hours. There you have the spinach salad at Vida Bistro! Imagine buying the frozen profiteroles from Trader Joe's and then thawing them, then thinking ooops I think i'll have these tomorrow and refreezing them. All the food here tasted frozen and/or reheated and/or soggy. The french fries? MacDonalds!! Try to dip a fry into the fresh from the freezer catsup. The soggyness can't compete with the frozen catsup! It will just bend and not even make a dent! The bread was disgusting and store bought. The wine was horrible. We were overcharged for our champagne. The only positive thing I can think of was our server was nice but not too nice and was so stealth we never even noticed when she laid things out on the table. Service was a little bit slow as some have said, but I do not care about that if service is good and even less about that if the food is good. Unfortunately, the food was horrible. Surprisingly though, that doesn't seem to matter to anyone! If you just like to go out and spend money on drinks and food you could buy yourself at Trader joe's - go to Vida Bistro!
The menu is not as broad as Left Bank next door but more traditional French and the quality is excellent and has a more hip atmosphere. Great place to go for excellent food and nice atmosphere - on occassion they have music which is a great way to spend an evening when the weather is nice and the doors are open. They have done a great job creating a European cafe feel in Menlo Park.
The food is solid, but unspectacular, French bistro. Three stars.
The atmosphere in every other way merits 4 stars. It's a place with personality.
So it really deserves 3.5. But since Yahoo doesn't offer that option and I have to decide, the tiebreaker always goes to my stomach where food is concerned.
I love the atmosphere and the friendly greetings. The food is pretty good. I've taken almost all my friends there and they are all happy that I did. The chocoloate cake is the best! And the raw oysters are to dream about!
Vida is a solid French bistro. The food is tasty and well-prepared (although I don't find it to be outstanding), and the atmosphere is very charming. It does feel very French when you walk in there, and it's very nice to be able to sit outdoors on a warm summer night. Be warned: brunch is not very good here.
